Officials in Papua New Guinea are investigating the deaths of nine people in a remote village in East Sepik in recent days.

It's unclear whether the deaths were from dysentery, or whether they were the result of infections from PNG's ongoing cholera epidemic.

Health authorities are meeting to formulate an action plan.

Mystery disease kills nine in PNG

It's now believed nine people have died in remote villages in Papua New Guinea's East Sepik province in the past few days.

But there's some confusion as to whether the deaths are from cholera or dysentery.

PNG health authorities have been in meetings for much of today to formulate a plan of action.

The cholera outbreak in East Sepik has spread to Ambunti district's
Iniok village and neighboring villages from the Tunap sub-district.
At least 10 people have been confirmed dead since 31 Dec 2011 [2010?], with unconfirmed reports of more casualties.

Ambunti-Dreikikir district administrator Solomon Hopkos confirmed
this last Friday [31 Dec 2010] after being alerted by community
affairs officers of Xstrata Copper company, which is developing the
Frieda River copper-gold project in the district. Its helicopter flew
health officials and necessary medical drugs from the Burui health
centre to the affected communities.

District health officer Dominica Wain, who is currently in the
affected villages to assess the situation, said: "As of 29-30 Dec
2010, more people are being affected, and the death toll is increasing."

Since cholera is waterborne, contaminated waste in the river will
prove fatal, because there are many villages along the banks of the
Sepik River, and it could spread to villages downstream.

Surge in cholera infections in PNG

There has been a sharp rise in the number of cholera infections in Papua New Guinea's capital Port Moresby.

Health authorities say there were 295 serious cases of cholera in Port Moresby in December.

So far this month there have been 138.

Altogether there have been six deaths and nearly 4,000 infections since the contagious disease arrived in the city last April.

Drought is being blamed for a resurgence in reported cases of cholera in Papua New Guinea?s Morobe Province.

On Saturday 19 people were admitted to the cholera treatment centre in Angau Hospital with symptoms of the disease and 12 tested positive.

PNG cholera death toll nears 500

Papua New Guinea?s top health official says nearly 500 people have died from the country?s prolonged cholera outbreak.

The Health Secretary, Dr Clement Malau, has told the newspaper, The National, that 483 people have died while more than 10,000 have been diagnosed with cholera since the first outbreak in August of 2009 in Morobe Province...

Quick response contains Bougainville cholera outbreak

An NGO in the autonomous Papua New Guinea province of Bougainville says prompt action by health authorities has contained the spread of cholera there.

The disease, which has claimed about 600 lives in 6 other PNG provinces in the past 20 months, has killed at least two on Bougainville with dozens more infected.

The Bougainville Women?s Federation spokesperson, Hona Holan, says the disease is affecting the northern parts of Buka island and hasn?t reached Buka town.
