On a recent trip to the local library, I stumbled across a non-fiction children's book called "Marven of the Great North Woods" by Kathryn Latky. It's about a small Jewish boy and a bearish French-Canadian lumberjack who become friends during the 1918 influenza that swept across Northern Minnesota. The boy in the story is the author's grandfather.
We used the book as a literature and Prep lesson. My boys loved the adventure of the story, were intrigued by the beary characters, and it opened the door up for some good conversation about the fear of the unknown, what we are doing to help prevent infection and how we can work as a family to help prepare for whatever the future holds. Though we all cannot hide out in the Great North Woods as the little boy did, we did talk about ways we may plan to help protect ourselves and our family and friends.
( And the best part of the book for me was that the little boy was reunited with his family, and they all survived the influenza!) Gotta love that kind of happy ending! :applause:
