Panama accumulates 1,511 cases of dengue so far in 2023
The Ministry of Health of Panama recommends keeping areas clean and eliminating breeding sites for the transmitting mosquito.

According to the latest report issued by the Department of Epidemiology, the Ministry of Health (Minsa) there are 1,511 confirmed cases of dengue in Panama that are broken down as follows: 1,386 cases without warning signs; 184 with warning signs; seven cases of severe dengue and no deaths have been registered.

The regions with the most positive cases are: Colón with 341 cases; Panama Metro 283 cases; West Panama with 179 cases; Bocas del Toro with 158 cases; North Panama with 147 cases; San Miguelito with 132 cases; Los Santos with 64 and Herrera with 63 cases.

He reiterated the importance of keeping houses and work environments clean, checking door meshes, windows, and looking under sinks, as these are places where there may be breeding sites for the transmitting mosquito.

Hantavirus cases

Regarding the confirmed cases of Hantavirus, the entity indicated that to date a total of fifteen (15) have been registered throughout the country; with hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome there are fourteen (11) live cases and 1 registered death in the province of Herrera and with hantavirus fever with four (4) cases.

The cases registered to date have been verified in the provinces of Herrera with six (6) cases; Los Santos with six (6) and Coclé with three (3 cases).

The Minsa stressed that people keep their homes and surroundings clean, also collected grains (such as rice and corn), store them and seal them to prevent the rodent from having contact and leaving their feces and urine in the surroundings.

Regarding malaria cases, the number of registered cases is 4,038; 102 new cases of malaria have been confirmed during this epidemiological week (86 in Guna Yala; 14 cases in Darién and 2 in Chiriquí).

So far in 2023, 4,038 accumulated cases have been confirmed; 102 active patients are confirmed, the Guna Yala region being the most active with 86 cases; Darien with 14 cases; Chiriquí with 2 cases of malaria, confirmed as the regions with the most confirmed cases to date.

The Minsa continues to reinforce the strategies to mitigate the cases of malaria in the country, the promotion and prevention strategies in these areas, distributing mosquito nets with chemicals and also, reinforcing the operational capacity and the supply of medicines against this disease throughout the country.

Leishmaniasis, Chikunguya and Zika

Around the cases of Leishmaniasis, they remain at 628 accumulated cases so far in 2023; of which there are 38 active cases, with 10 confirmed in West Panama; 8 in Bocas del Toro, 7 in the Ngäbe Buglé region, North Panama with 4 cases, Coclé, Panama Metro, San Miguelito and Veraguas with 2 cases each and Colón with one case.

Seven (7) cases of Chikungunya remain, distributed in the sectors of North Panama in Alcalde Díaz; San Miguelito, in the José Domingo Espinar sector; in West Panama, Burunga sector and in the metropolitan region, in El Chorrillo.


There have been no reported cases of Zika so far in 2023.​

MINSA reports more than 2 thousand cases of dengue in the country

The latest report issued by the Department of Epidemiology, the Ministry of Health (Minsa), at week No 27, on the updated cases of monkeypox, dengue, hantavirus, malaria, leishmaniasis, Chikunguya and Zika in the country.

Below is the detail of the Minsa epidemiology report:

Monkeypox (Monkeypox)

In the epidemiological week No. 27 (corresponding to Sunday, July 2, to Saturday, July 8) it continues for several consecutive weeks, without confirming new cases of monkeypox, with which the confirmed cases accumulated up to July 8 remain at 237; of which 89 cases were during the year 2022 and 148 cases, so far in 2023 (146 men and 2 women).

There are no active cases or in home isolation, or hospitalized, 1 death remains and 236 people completed their isolation, without major setbacks. Until June 27, 1,775 doses against monkeypox have been placed (1,275 first dose and 500 second dose).

Dengue

The Minsa report highlights that there are 2,700 confirmed cases of dengue throughout the country. The regions with the most positive cases are: Bocas del Toro with 667 cases; Columbus with 569 cases; Panama Metro with 444 cases; North Panama with 254 cases; West Panama with 236 cases and San Miguelito with 177 cases.

Hantavirus

Hantavirus cases are confirmed in 26 cumulative cases across the country; of which with hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome, thirteen (13) cases are confirmed and with hantavirus fever there are thirteen (13) cases.

In total, so far in 2023, 26 cases have been confirmed, (25 are alive and 1 death) registered in the province of Herrera.

These 26 confirmed cases, 17 cases have been verified in the provinces of Los Santos; Herrera with 6 cases and Coclé with 3 cases.

Malaria

The Minsa indicates that during epidemiological week No. 27, 38 new cases of malaria were detected (29 in Guna Yala; 6 in Panama East; 1 in Darién, 1 in Panama Metro and 1 in San Miguelito). that goes from the year 2023, of 5 thousand 262 cases.

The Minsa continues to reinforce the strategies to mitigate the cases of malaria in the country, the promotion and prevention strategies in these areas, distributing mosquito nets with chemicals and also, reinforcing the operational capacity and the supply of medicines against this disease throughout the country.

Leishmaniasis, Chikunguya and Zika

Regarding the cases of Leishmaniasis, during epidemiological week No. 27, the Minsa confirmed 15 active cases, of which 3 are from Bocas del Toro, 3 in North Panama, 3 in West Panama, 2 in Veraguas, 1 in San Miguelito and 1 in Cocle. So far in 2023, there have been 921 confirmed cases.

Seven (7) cases of Chikungunya remain, distributed in the sectors of North Panama in Alcalde Díaz; San Miguelito, in the José Domingo Espinar sector; in West Panama, Burunga sector and in the metropolitan region, in El Chorrillo.

And in this week No. 27, three cases of Zika are confirmed, (1 in Panama Norte-Chilibre; 1 in Metetí, Darién and 1 in Tocumen, Panama Metro).​

Panama exceeds 12,000 confirmed cases of dengue

The Ministry of Health of Panama (Minsa), through its Department of Epidemiology, reported on Saturday that around 12,233 cases of dengue have been recorded in the country so far this year 2023, also confirming two new deaths that total ten deaths from this disease.

The health entity declared that the regions with the most confirmed cases of dengue are Bocas del Toro, with 3,246 cases; Colón, with 2,461; Panama Metro, with 1,584; Panamá Oeste, with 1,200 and Chiriquí, with 1,093.

The Minsa has undertaken a campaign to eradicate the impact of the Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, the main carriers of the disease, reiterating the importance of keeping the residential sector and the work environment clean, installing metal grilles on doors and windows, reviewing them gradually, as well as How to search for vector breeding sites.​..
