NEW DELHI, Jan 18, 2010 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) --
National health regulator Drug Controller General of India on Thursday said it will permit Panacea Biotec (BSE:531349) to conduct clinical trials for its swine flu vaccines in the country.

"We will give permission to Delhi-based Pancea Biotec to conduct clinical trials for their Influenza A HINI (swine flu) vaccine in India," the Drug Controller-General of India Surinder Singh said in a symposium on 'India - An Emerging Destination for Clinical Trials' organised by the Institute of Clinical Research.

Panacea officials were not immediately available for the comment.

The DCGI had earlier given permissions to conduct clinical trials for developing an indigenous vaccines to other Indian firms.

Last year, four companies had approached the government to provide assistance in locally developing the vaccines for HINI.

However, Health Ministry officials had already placed the order for the import of 1.5 million doses of anti-swine flu vaccines in the country.

According to the industry experts it would take around another 3-4 months for the Indian companies to develop the vaccine.
