Palestinian doctor dies of swine flu in Israeli hospital

Gaza City - A Palestinian doctor from the Gaza Strip died of swine flu at an Israeli hospital Tuesday, Palestinian health officials said. Mahmoud al-Haddad, a blood vessel specialist from Gaza City, was transferred to Israel on Monday after being diagnosed with A/H1N1, said Hassan Khalaf, the deputy health minister in the de-facto government of the radical Islamist Hamas movement ruling the strip.

Al-Haddad had also suffered from chronic heart and lung disease, he told
reporters.

His death brings to four the number of people who have died of the virus in Gaza, Khalaf said. All of them suffered from chronic illnesses as well.

On Sunday, Hamas' Health Ministry announced that swine flu had spread to Gaza and confirmed five cases.

The latest death brings to some 12 the number of people affected by swine
flu in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

More than 60 people have died from swine flu in Israel.
