First case of swine flu diagnosed in Palestinian territories


The first case of swine flu was diagnosed in the Palestinian territories on Wednesday.

The patient is a four-year-old boy in Bethlehem in the West Bank. Dr. Assad Ramlawi, director of the Palestinian Health Ministry, said the boy returned from the United States two days ago and showed flu symptoms. Ramlawi said tests disclosed that he was suffering from swine flu.

Ramlawi refused to give the boy's name or say where he was in the US. He said Wednesday the boy was at home in stable condition and that his family members were taking precautions, including wearing surgical masks.

Bethlehem ? Ma?an ? Another case of the H1N1 virus, popularly referred to as swine flu, has surfaced in the central West Bank, according to Palestine's High National Committee on Friday.

The committee said in a statement that the second case of the flu was confirmed in the mother of a four-year-old child who was previously found to be carrying the virus in Bethlehem.

The two had reportedly just returned from Texas in the United States, which has seen thousands of confirmed cases of the deadly virus.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health also confirmed that the two have the virus, but added that the mother and child's conditions were not life-threatening. The ministry said they would not be requiring hospitalization.

Meanwhile, a symptomatic man in his 40s in the northern West Bank city of Qalqiliya was placed under quarantine after being tested in a hospital there. The results will be announced on Saturday, officials said.

The ministry also said that people visiting Palestine from countries affected by the flu, such as the United States and Mexico, should report to the nearest governmental hospital in the event that they develop flu symptoms within one week of arriving.

Health officials also called on doctors and clinics to continue preparations for dealing with cases, and to alert the ministry if the have suspicions about a patient's condition. Patients will not be charged for medical exams and hospitalization, the ministry added.

Nablus - The Ministry of Health announced Tuesday a Palestinian to have discovered three new cases of influenza A (H1N1), known as swine flu, in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. In total, five cases were detected.

The director of primary health care and public health, and spokesman of the Ministry of Health, Asad Ramlawi said that the three persons are students in the United States. They were returned to the West Bank Monday.

Two come from Bethlehem, and the third Al-Bireh (Ramallah). "They are aged 16 to 18 years," said Ramlawi.

Patients are not at risk and are subject to monitoring.

The first case of swine flu in the West Bank had been detected in a child four years June 10 The boy had just returned from the United States and had been admitted to hospital in Beit Jala.

Dozens of people have been diagnosed in Israel, but not fatal cases.

Three new cases of the H1N1 virus were diagnosed Tuesday, bringing the regional total for the West Bank up to five cases.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Ramallah confirmed the diagnoses and Director of Medical Care Dr As?ad Ramlawi confirmed that one of the new cases was in Ramallah and the other two cases were diagnosed in Bethlehem.

All three new patients were students studying abroad returning home after the close of their semesters. All three arrived in the West Bank on Monday, after which family members brought them to hospital showing flu-like symptoms.

Ramlawi explained that the patients were suspected of carrying the virus, more commonly known as swine flu, and Ministry officials quickly ran the samples at the Ramallah labs to confirm the diagnosis.

A/H1N1 flu less likely in Gaza due to siege

GAZA, June 20 (Xinhua) -- The Hamas-run Health Ministry in the Gaza Strip Saturday said that influenza A/H1N1 might reach the Israeli-blockaded territory but the possibilities still remain low due to the embargo.

The warning was made after eight A/H1N1 virus cases were registered in the West Bank, most of them involved people who returned from the United States.

"We are carrying out the necessary preventive measures but the Israeli blockade and the isolation of Gaza from the outside world make the spread of the virus unlikely," Hassan Khalaf, deputy Health Minister, told Xinhua.

He added that the Health Ministry had set up two medical checkpoints near Erez crossing to examine people travelling to the West Bank and Israel and at Rafah crossing point between Gaza and Egypt.

There are no pigs in the Gaza Strip but fear still remain since numerous solidarity delegations from the U.S. and Europe are visiting the territory to inspect the damage made by Israeli military during January offensive.

According to Khalaf, the Health Ministry had bought the necessary equipment and drugs to fight the A/H1N1 virus from Ramallah in coordination with the World Health Organization (WHO).

The Israeli closure has been in force since June 2007.

H1N1: Two more cases diagnosed, West Bank up to 12 diagnoses

Nablus/Tulkarem - Ma?an - A twelfth case of H1N1 was diagnosed in Nablus Friday morning, following quick on the heels of the eleventh case, from Tulkarem, Thursday night.

Both patients are young boys, the latest unidentified, but the Tulkarem case, a three-year-old, reportedly arrived in the West Bank with the virus after travelling in the United States with his parents.

Head of public relations at the health ministry Dr Omar An-Nasser urged the parents of the infected children, and parents across the West Bank, to take the necessary precautions to limit the spread of the virus.

Director General of Health Care in the ministry, Dr Asa?d Ar-Remlawy said the Nablus child diagnosed Thursday is in stable condition and was released from hospital to continue treatment at home.

Health officials said they expected the number of cases of H1N1 to increase, as Palestinians travel home for weddings this summer.

Nablus ? Ma?an ? The Palestinian Health Ministry announced Monday morning that the number of Palestinians in the West Bank affected by swine had risen to 26 after discovering four new cases in Nablus and Ramallah.

Dr As?ad Ar-Ramlawi, the head of the health care department at the Health Ministry, told Ma?an that the ministry discovered three new cases of swine flu in Nablus and a new one in Ramallah.

Thus the number of people infected by swine flu was raised in Nablus to 14, all from the same family. Meanwhile, a new case discovered in Ramallah.

RAMALLAH, July 5 (KUNA) -- Two new swine flu cases have been recorded among Palestinians in the West Bank, the Ministry of Health said on Sunday.
Dr. Asaad Al-Ramlawi, head of health care, said that the two new cases are for an elderly man and a child in Bethlehem.

He said the tally now stands at 61.

Palestinian fatwa bans marriage without A/H1N1-free proof

RAMALLAH, July 7 (Xinhua) -- The Palestinian National Authority's (PNA) top cleric on Tuesday issued a fatwa banning the issuance of marriage contract without a certificate that proves the couple is free from A/H1N1 virus.

The religious ruling was made after more swine flue cases were registered in the West Bank.

In his fatwa, Chief Justice Tayseer al-Tamimi ordered the religious courts in the Palestinian territories not to complete the wedding legal procedures unless the couple brings a document from the Health Ministry proving they are not hit by the flu virus.

Al-Tamimi said the fatwa aims at curbing the spread of the virus in the West Bank.

The Health Ministry said today that two new cases were discovered in the cities of Ramallah and Bethlehem, raising the number of A/H1N1 cases in the Palestinian territories to 69. No death cases were reported.
