​Gilgit: The Health Department of Gilgit-Baltistan has reported a sudden outbreak of an appendicitis-like illness in Shamshal village, Hunza. Since July, over 30 patients have been affected and referred to DHQ Hospital Aliabad, Gilgit, and Aga Khan Medical Center Aliabad for diagnosis and treatment.

Several patients have recovered after treatment, while some required surgeries, including appendectomies. So far, 20 patients have undergone surgery at DHQ Hospital Hunza, with two still under observation, and 11 surgeries have been conducted at Aga Khan Health Services Aliabad.

In response, the Health Department has initiated immediate emergency measures:

1. Emergency Transport Arrangements: Special ambulances have been deployed in Shamshal for patient referrals, with additional vehicles stationed in Aliabad to ensure timely transfer to major health facilities.​

2. Deployment of Medical Teams: A specialized team comprising surgeons, medical officers, radiologists, health education officers, and ultrasound specialists will visit Shamshal on November 13–14 to provide on-site diagnosis and treatment...
