ISLAMABAD: A team of experts has culled more than 10,000 chickens from a poultry farm in a suburb of the federal capital where avian flu virus was found.

Confirming the report, Poultry Research Institute Department official Dr Masood Zubari said samples, collected from a poultry farm at Manga Village, some 25-kilometres from the federal capital, had shown traces of avian influenza H5 in chickens.A special team was dispatched to the area which had sealed the farm owned by Qari Najib Ullah after culling more than 10,000 chickens. However, he added, no other farm was found affected.

The in-charge of the Epidemic Cell at NIH Dr. Jaleel Kamran told the participants that Pakistan has reported 76 outbreaks of Bird Flu in 2007, the latest being on November 22 at Mansehra. Of these, 56 outbreaks involved commercial and backyard poultry and 20 outbreaks were reported in wild birds, mostly crows. There has not been a single suspected human case in 2007. Last year, 14 people were hospitalized and all tested negative for H5N1.

Bird flu confirmed in capital farms, 10,000 chicken culled

ISLAMABAD: The livestock wing of ministry of food and agriculture has confirmed the presence of menacing bird flu in four chicken farms of Chak Shazad.

However the owners of the farms refused to let the officials cull the suspicious chicken, after which the ?assistance? of district administration was sought for culling of 10,000 birds.
The owners of these farms had earlier refused to cooperate in the culling process but agreed after the livestock department?s assurance of compensation.
The commissioner livestock, Dr. R. H. Usmani informed the journalists about the entire issue, and said that it was however not a widespread virus, but our tests have confirmed the presence of bird flu here. He said that a survey was underway, but so far there has been no information regarding bird flu. Still the vigilance has been enhanced, and has cautioned that if the farm owners continued to resist, help of the district administration would be sought, in order to contain the virus.

All the infected premises of the affected farms were disinfected on 1 and 2 December 2007. The premises were closed for one month.
Ring vaccination with an H5 inactivated monovalent vaccine in a 3-km-radius zone around the outbreak is ongoing.
