Militants attack polio workers in Pakistani tribal belt

PESHAWAR, PAKISTAN ? Militants opened fire on a polio vaccination team in Pakistan?s tribal belt on Monday, killing a paramilitary soldier and underscoring the continued threat to one of the region?s most urgent health campaigns.

Armed men hiding in a field fired at the health workers as they were travelling through Bajaur tribal district, which borders Afghanistan. A paramilitary soldier who had been guarding the team was killed, and the armed men fled.

?It was hit and run. The militants made good on their escape,? said a senior tribal official in the district, who spoke by telephone on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak with the news media...

ISLAMABAD: A second child has contracted polio in a restive Pakistani tribal region near Afghan border after the Taliban banned vaccinations there nearly a year ago, a UN official said Thursday.

The first polio case was detected in the North Waziristan region, also known as the strong bastion of Taliban and ******** linked militants, earlier this month, with officials expecting a "bigger outbreak" of the disease.

"This is the second child, a 36-month-old boy getting paralysed after contracting polio," the World Health Organization's senior coordinator for polio eradication in Pakistan, Elias Durry, told AFP...

PESHAWAR: A new case of polio has been discovered in Bara tehsil, Khyber Agency, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 10.

The National Institute of Health (NIH) in Islamabad confirmed the type-1 virus on Monday in eight-month-old Abubakr Siddique, a resident of Haji Mullah Khel Hujra, Akakhel tehsil.

According to the institute?s report, the onset of paralysis in Abubakr occurred on May 10. The report further stated the child had not received a single dose of oral polio vaccine...

PESHAWAR: Yet another case of polio has been reported, this time from an inaccessible area of Bara, Khyber Agency. This is the 17th case recorded in Pakistan this year and the sixth case reported from Khyber, parts of which remain inaccessible to vaccination teams.

State Minister Saira Afzal Tarar told the meeting convened at the Ministry of National Health Services to satisfy Saudi Arabias demand about the vaccination.

The injured worker was taken to the tehsil headquarters hospital, where doctors later said she was out of danger. The said she would be discharged from the hospital on Monday (today).

The National Institute of Health (NIH) in Islamabad on Friday confirmed the preventable disease in 12-month-old Ayesha, a resident of Nala Kajori in Bara, Khyber Agency. Having not received even a single dose of the vaccine, the onset of paralysis occurred on June 23 as recalled by her parents.

A new case of polio has been recorded in the provincial capital after a long hiatus of six years, said health officials.

Uzair Muhammad is the ill-fated 12-month-old son of Dost Muhammad, resident of Aijazabad-I, Gulbahar no. 4, a densely populated area. The onset of paralysis in the child occurred on June 30, 2013...

...This is the fifth polio case reported from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa; the tally in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas has reached 12 so far. In 2013, 21 reports of people contracting polio have been reported across the country.

Of these, 17 have emerged due to the ?ban? on vaccinations imposed by the Taliban, security threats or because of parents? refusal to allow drops to be administered to their children...

QUETTA: Armed militants attacked a polio team in Pishin town of Balochistan on Tuesday.

Abdullah Khan, a police official said militants killed a policeman guarding polio workers in the Pishin bazaar area. The slain police man was identified as Shah Muhammad.

He said militants sped away after the incident and took a weapon from the slain policeman with them. Polio workers were unhurt during the attack...
