Polio resurfaces in Sargodha
Polio was diagnosed in a 15-month old girl in Sargodha, making it the first case in the district in six years. She was identified as Tooba, the daughter of an Iqbal Colony resident Khalid Mehmood.
The viral disease was diagnosed when her father brought her to a hospital. Captain (retired) Dr Umar Hayat told The Express Tribune that the child had lost function in both legs and her urinary tract had also been affected.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has confirmed the presence of poliovirus P1 in the sewage of three Pakistani cities - Karachi, Hyderabad and Peshawar.

?Laboratory analysis has confirmed that P1 poliovirus was present in the sewage of Gadap Town in Karachi, Hyderabad and University Town in Peshawar,? a WHO official said on Monday.

The official said the samples were collected earlier this month.He added that the laboratory tests helped identify the areas where the virus was rampant, allowing the authorities to plan extensive polio vaccination campaigns there...

PESHAWAR, Feb 25: A three-month-old girl from Malakand district on Monday became this year?s second polio case in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Local officials told Dawn that Khais, a resident of Umar Killey Badragai Union Council in Dargai tehsil of Malakand district, had tested positive for polio at National Institute of Health, Islamabad.

They said the tehsil hadn?t reported any polio case for five years. The first polio case of the year in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was reported on Feb 8 as a 13-month-old boy from Bannu district, Muzakar Khan, was diagnosed with polio.

PESHAWAR: After the Independent Monitoring Board labeled Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) a ?safe sanctuary? for polio virus ? 40% of all polio cases in the country were recorded there last year ? a new case has been reported in Mardan district.
The crippling virus has paralysed another child for life as the National Institute of Health Islamabad confirmed two and a half year old Huzaifa, a resident of Salar Kallay, has been infected with polio.
This brings the number of polio patients reported in the country in 2013 to five; three of those are in K-P. The first case of 2013 was reported in Karachi, then in Bannu, Malakand, Mian Wali and now the fifth one in Mardan.

LANDIKOTAL: Unidentified armed men tortured a polio worker in Landikotal and warned him and others involved in the anti-polio campaign to quit the campaign or be ready to be killed.

Four armed men intercepted a polio team's worker, Adnan Shinwari, in Angoor Bagh area of Peero Khel on Wednesday.

They reportedly tortured the worker and snatched his vaccine kits, and gave him and all other polio workers the last warning to give up polio campaigns or be ready for consequences, Adnan Shinwari told media, describing the four armed persons who, he said, wore masks and were armed with daggers and automatic guns...

Families which vaccinated their children against polio in Bara, Khyber Agency, have reportedly been fined and threatened by militants.

Salman Afridi*, a resident of Bachi Nehar in Sipah, Bara, said around 20 families in Speen Qabar and Bachi Nehar, Sipah vaccinated their children against polio.

Yet another polio vaccination team came under attack in the Katlang area of Mardan when suspected militants opened fire at the police van deployed for the security of the teams. Thankfully, there were no casualties.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Musarat Shah said that around 9:00am, he and other police officials were deployed at the Basic Health Unit in the Shero area to provide security to polio vaccination teams, when two militants opened fire on them.

?The men were hiding in a thicket and opened fire,? he said, adding that police returned fired, forcing the attackers to flee.

Shah said that after the incident heavy contingents of police rushed to the area and launched a search operation. However, no one was arrested...

PESHAWAR: Two new polio cases reported in a single day from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Federally Administered Tribal Areas have raised questions about the strategy for countering the refusal cases.

The first polio case was reported from a chronically refusing family in Mardan district. Official documents of the National Virology Laboratory (NVI), Islamabad revealed that a seven months old male child from Mardan was diagnosed with the crippling poliomyelitis-1 strain of the poliovirus. His father had refused to allow polio teams to vaccinate his child.

An official of the provincial Health Department, Nauman Khan, said over six polio campaigns were conducted during the last six months in Mardan but the father of the child could not be convinced to get the child vaccinated...

PESHAWAR ? The World Health Organisation (WHO) fears that Mardan District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), could become a polio virus reservoir like Peshawar and is urging immediate action to curb the disease there, officials said.

"We are extremely concerned over the second polio case from Mardan in 2013," Dr. Jawad Khan at WHO told Central Asia Online. "Mardan is now leading with two cases in the country's total tally of nine cases."

Last year, Mardan suffered four polio cases, second to Peshawar's six, and the emergence of two cases this year has alarmed the KP Health Department, WHO and UNICEF, the doctor said...
