Ministry says no human bird flu case in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Health on Tuesday confirmed that all samples tested for human cases of avian influenza at the National institute of health had proved negative and there was thus, no case of human avian influenza in the country. [A more logically correct statement would be that "there was thus no case of human avian influenza in the samples tested" -- but never mind. Why quibble about such a minor point...?]
The spokesman of the ministry also confirmed that all the suspected people, who were hospitalised in the isolation wards as a matter of precaution, have tested negative in the laboratory tests conducted by the national institute of health and have, therefore, been discharged from the hospitals of Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
The spokesman said that the human samples were collected jointly by the national institute of health and the World health organisation (WHO) from all the bird flu affected poultry farms as a matter of routine, under the standard operating procedure.
101 human samples have been collected so far from the fourteen bird flu affected farms, out of which 76 have been found negative, he said, adding that tests on the remaining 25 samples were in progress.
He said that surveillance would continue for suspected human cases in poultry farms affected with H5N1. He said the government had put in place all possible preventive and curative measures and there should be no concern on the matter.
