Minister calls for measures to check bird flu

KARACHI: In view of apprehensions about possible eruption of bird flu virus, the Provincial Health Minister Dr. Saghir Ahmed has issued directive for immediately activating "District Bird Flu Committees".
Chairing a meeting at his office the Minister specially asked EDOs Health of coastal cities like Karachi, Hyderabad, Badin, Thatta and Sanghar, to remain alert and keep vigil on their respective areas.
He appealed to people that if they find wild birds, chickens or migratory birds from Siberia dead in a large number, report the same immediately to District Bird Flu Committee or to the offices of committee members like EDOs Agriculture and Wildlife so that protective measures could be taken by them and also ascertain the cause of their death.
Dr. Saghir asked the owners of pet birds to get them vaccinated in view of Bird Flu apprehensions. Similarly, he said, all the poultry owners should get their chicks vaccinated to protect them from Bird Flu.
The people were advised to avoid taking bath at coastal areas where wild or migratory birds are found and also avoid touching the dead birds.
Kamal reviews ongoing water and sewerage development schemes: Nazim Karachi Syed Mustafa Kamal has directed KWSB to fully supervise water distribution system in the city during Ramazan-ul-Mubarak and ensure that water supply continues as normal to all areas.
He stated this in a meeting held to review KWSB's ongoing development projects during which he was also given briefing on water distribution in the city.
Mustafa Kamal directed that work on development schemes be expedited and special attention be paid on recovery of KWSB dues.
MD Water Board Ghulaf Arif and other concerned engineers informed the meeting that problems are being faced in some areas in water pumping because of grave power crisis.
However, because of steps taken by Haq Parast leadership during the last two and a half years, there is no water crisis in the city.
Mustafa Kamal pointed out that Haq Parast leadership has spent Rs 30 billion during the last two and half year on improvement of water and sewerage situation whereby new lines have been laid and distribution system improved in the city's inner areas.
"It is the result of our best strategy that there is no water crisis in the city as against protest rallies which used to be taken out in the past against water shortage".
He directed KWSB engineers that despite better water supply situation, they should not be complacent and all the officials, specially XENs should remain active and keep providing complete report to Town Nazims.
Nazim called for their special attention during Ramazan-ul-Mubarak so that the citizens does not face problem during the month.
He said special care be taken about maintenance of generators wherever installed so that pumping remains unaffected.
Mustafa Kamal directed that water supply projects for Mahmoodabad-Manzoor Colony be completed expeditiously while work be geared up on schemes in certain areas of Malir where there is water shortage.
He said City Government has spent Rs 30 billion on water and sewerage infrastructure and, therefore, there should be an increase in the number of consumers as well as payers of bills in areas which have been supplied water.
