No human bird flu case in Pakistan, says Health Ministry

ISLAMABAD: No case of human bird flu has been detected in any part of Pakistan, the Health Ministry said on Friday.
?I categorically declare that Pakistan has no case of human avian flu till now,? Anwar Mehmood, the Health Ministry secretary, told a press conference. [Somebody pass that man his hat!]
Anwar said that 25 samples had been sent for bird flu tests following identification of the H5N1 strain at some poultry farms near the federal capital on April 16. He confirmed that 23 had tested negative, while the results of the two remaining samples had yet to be received.
However, the WHO has advised the Pakistani government to cull all chickens at poultry farms within a three-kilometre radius of the farms where the bird flu virus had been confirmed, Anwar added. There is a lot of confusion and panic among people over the pandemic, but there is nothing to worry about it, he said, adding that all precautionary measures had been taken to check the disease.
Anwar said that poultry flocks in Charsadda and Abbottabad, and Sihala and Tarlai had been culled. Anwar said that the Health Ministry had received at least 40 suspected human bird flu cases so far and that 15 of them had been reported from Tarlai on Friday.
Online adds: A man was admitted to the intensive care unit of Rawalpindi General Hospital on suspicion of being infected with the H5N1 virus.
Muhammad Naveed (21) arrived at RGH suffering from high fever, cough and flu. Doctors placed him in an isolation ward suspecting he had bird flu. Naveed?s blood, sputum and phlegm samples have been sent to National Institute of Health laboratories for tests.
