Every year, approximately 30,000 children die of Pneumonia in Pakistan out of which 15,000 to 16,000 get affected by pneumococcal in Punjab alone, while these deaths are nothing short of a "criminal negligence." These were the views of speakers at an advocacy seminar with regard to pneumococcal Vaccine at a local hotel here today...

PESHAWAR:

At least 80,701 pneumonia patients below the age of five and 3,162 above the age of five were registered in government hospitals of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) from January to October 2013.

According to a UNICEF report, Pakistan has around five million children under age five. Of these, 329,000 die before celebrating their fifth birthday, and 13% deaths occur due to pneumonia.

Other reports say 15 countries account for three-quarters of paediatric pneumonia cases worldwide ? Pakistan is the third-largest contributor, with seven million cases each year.

Lady Health Workers (LHW) K-P Coordinator Dr Tahir Nadeem Khan told The Express Tribune 89 out of every 1,000 children in Pakistan die before reaching their fifth birthday. A majority of these children die before they turn one due to entirely preventable diseases like diarrhoea and pneumonia. ?Due to a lack of awareness, only 1% of women in K-P can identify early signs of pneumonia in children,? added Khan...

World Health Organisation (WHO) and World Food Programme (WFP) representatives said on Friday that children in Tharparkar were not dying of malnutrition, but because of diarrhoea, pneumonia and other causes.

?Initial investigation reports suggest that diarrhoea, pneumonia and other factors are to blame for the deaths of children in Tharparkar,? said Dr Ni?am Abid, the WHO representative in Pakistan, on the sidelines of an event.

Lola Castro, the WFP Pakistan country director, agreed with Dr Abid and said: ?If people in Tharparkar are in need of food, then we will provide them with food as well as technical assistance.?

A team of WFP, WHO and Unicef experts is leaving for Tharparkar on Monday to look into the causes behind the child deaths in the district.

Around 120 children have reportedly died in Tharparkar in a couple of months because of food and water shortage.

CM orders relief items for Tharparkar affectees

Lahore Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has expressed deep sense of grief and sorrow over the death of a number of persons, including children, in Tharparkar due to drought.

The chief minister said that the Punjab government and the people were with their affected brethren of Tharparkar in this hour of trial and were ready to provide all possible help to them.

The CM directed the Provincial Disaster Management Authority director general to send necessary relief items to Tharparkar for the affectees.

Karachi Upset with the reported death of over 100 people because of drought in Tharparkar, the Sindh High Court (SHC) chief justice has directed the authorities to submit their report on the tragic situation in a week.
