64 polio cases in Fata this year

ISLAMABAD - Today Pakistan is in the global spotlight due to the continued transmission of poliovirus in the country as so far this year Pakistan has reported a total of 126 polio cases, out of which 64 cases were from FATA.

It was discussed in a meeting of Federal and Provincial Health Ministers in Islamabad the other day held to discuss and finalise the President?s Polio Emergency Plan.

Presided by the Federal Health Minister, Makhdoom Shahabuddin, the meeting discussed thread-bare the President?s Emergency Action Plan for Polio Eradication in the country which has been developed jointly by national and international experts on the subjects in the wake of sharp increase in the number of polio cases in Pakistan during the current year.

The meeting was informed that today Pakistan is in the global spotlight, due to the continued transmission of poliovirus in the country.

But the window of opportunity is narrow, and the need to ensure that everyone - from donor governments to local health officials - continues this fight, even in the midst of such tough conditions like the recent floods in Pakistan and the ongoing insecurity and inaccessibility in certain areas of the country.

According to reports every third child in FATA is not vaccinated and then there are operational and planning challenges as well.

3 more polio cases detected in Khyber Agency

BARA: Three fresh polio cases have been detected in Khyber Agency, putting the total figure in the tribal region at 30 this year.

An official of the Health Department confirmed that 18 months old Mohammad, seven months old Mahnoor from Bara and one year old Fajaar from Landikotal had been infected by the polio virus.

The Bara tehsil is the most polio-affected area in Khyber Agency where 22 polio cases have been detected in 2010...

Polio incidence the highest in a decade

Polio incidence has hit an all-time high in the country with the detection of 139 fresh cases of the crippling disease this year.

Most of these polio cases, the highest in a decade, are reported in the restive Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) and the poorly governed, Sindh, province.

Until three years ago, polio was under control with 32 cases reported in 2007, 40 in 2006, 28 in 2005 and 53 in 2004, but things took a bad turn in 2008 when the tally soared to 117.

Experts blame poor immunisation of children due to accessibility and managerial issues for this resurgence in Pakistan, which is polio endemic besides India, Afghanistan and Nigeria.

Gul Afridi, a WHO official in Islamabad, claimed only half of the children below five were immunised in the restive tribal areas due to clashes between security forces and militants. He also felt mass displacement of people in the country by the July-August flooding had badly impacted the fight against polio.

Recently, alarm bells began ringing when a National Institute of Health (NIH) report questioned the efficacy of polio vaccine by revealing that around 80 per cent of this year?s polio sufferers were administered anti-polio drops on several occasions. Experts suspect the vaccine might have lost its efficacy for not being stored at the required temperature, especially in faraway areas where power outages are frequent...
