Sindh govt unaware of four cholera cases

At least four cases of cholera, a deadly water-borne disease, were reported in the city, but the provincial health paid no heed to the health threat that can become an endemic within a short span of time.

Cholera is an infectious and often fatal bacterial disease of the small intestine, caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae and typically contracted from infected water supplies and causes severe vomiting and diarrhea.

Sources in the health department said three samples of suspected cholera patients had been sent to the Public Health Laboratory of National Institute of Health, Islamabad and it was confirmed that two children were suffering from the contagious bacterial disease.

The two confirmed cholera patients include seven-year old Karishma, a resident of Haroonabad near Shershah in SITE Town and 8-year old Muhammad Yousuf, who lives in the Shareefabad area of Korangi.

Health officials in Sindh said in addition to these two confirmed cholera patients, two more cases had been confirmed at private laboratories in Sindh, which included a 5-year-old boy named Asif and another child from Agra Taj Colony Lyari.

Two cholera cases confirmed in Mansehra

MANSEHRA: Two cases of Cholera have been confirmed in Mansehra district, a health official said on Thursday.

?The National Institute of Health Islamabad has confirmed two cases of Cholera in Mansehra,? Executive District Officer (Health) Dr Mohammad Javed Tanoli told reporters here.

He said over 520 people including children and elderly people were visiting the hospitals with the symptoms of gastroenteritis in the district on a daily basis. The EDO urged the people to take the precautionary measures against the diseases.

Cholera outbreak in Khyber Agency

LANDIKOTAL: Cholera has broken out in different parts of Khyber Agency. According to Health Department of the agency, some three hundred persons, including women and children, have been struck by cholera in various parts of the agency.

A surgeon, Dr Abdul Qudoos, while talking to media persons in Landikotal, disclosed that 50 out of 300 victims have been found serious and have been referred to hospitals in Peshawar for better treatment.

He said that Malagori area was mainly affected by cholera where more than two hundred cases have been registered. Another surgeon told that it was not cholera and said that it was food poisoning that has adverse effects on health of the locals in Khyber Agency. He said that cholera is a serious disease that can be tested in any registered laboratory.

However, the locals have regretted that there are no proper hospitals in Jamrud and Landikotal to cater to the needs of the poor tribal patients. They demanded of the government to arrange mobile medical teams to visit the most-affected areas to provide medical care facilities at their doorstep.

KARACHI - Out of the 283 suspected cholera cases in rain-hit areas of Sindh, 24 have been confirmed positive and three people have died to the disease so far, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said in its report issued on Sunday evening. The report stated appalling figures of the people affected by different diseases in the disaster-hit areas. The WHO Disease Early Warning System (DEWS), set up during last year?s floods, stated that a total of 1,734,929 consultations were reported, out of which acute respiratory infections had the highest proportionate of morbidity with 19.4 percent, followed by skin diseases (18 percent ), suspected malaria (10 percent ) and other acute diarrhoea (11 percent).

?Between a month?s period (August 16 to September 15) the DEWS detected 225 alerts, out of which 42 were confirmed outbreaks and the Rapid Response Team responded to all reported outbreaks within 48 hours and among these, 35 were attributed to acute watery diarrhoea,? the DEWS said in the report. ?In the last few days, the WHO distributed health kits, essential medicines and medical supplies to cover the needs of a population of about a quarter million,? the report quoted WHO representative Dr Guido Sabatinelli as saying...
