A female patient who got admitted at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) five days ago is confirmed as being afflicted with Crimean Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF).

According to the treating physician, Dr. Jamal Zafar, the 35 year-old patient, who is a resident of Sector G-8, Islamabad, had a platelet count of zero. ?Other symptoms included bleeding from multiple sights and fever. She is completely out of danger now,? he said.

When asked about the source of the infection, Dr. Jamal said, the contact is unclear. ?She did go to her village for Eid, but since the virus does not have such a long incubation period, it is unclear where she contracted the disease from,? Dr. Jamal said.

Another patient dies of Congo fever in Nishtar

LAHORE, April 10: Another man has died of fatal tropical disease — Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) — at the Nishtar Hospital in Multan.

Muhammad Yasin (28), a resident of House No 150, Block E, Dera Ghazi Khan, was shifted to the Nishtar Hospital a few days back with massive bleeding from his nose, mouth and ears. He was kept in an isolated intensive care ward, but he died on Tuesday.

An official privy to the information told Dawn that it was the fourth CCHF-related death in South Punjab during the past six months.

He said six out of 16 suspected people were diagnosed as CCHF patients after the laboratory and clinical investigations during the period.

Of the four who lost their lives, three belonged to Dera Ghazi Khan and one to Bhakar district, he said and added they had been dealing in cattle trade.

Surveillance officers of the World Health Organization at DG Khan and Multan have been alerted for case-investigation after reporting of a fresh death.

Health officials in areas concerned have also been directed to thoroughly investigate the matter and take preventive measures to stop the spread of the disease to other districts of the province.

Initially, the patients are diagnosed through common symptoms of the disease, including headache and joint pain, and in the later stage, they are confirmed as CCHF patients through particular symptoms, including red eyes, flushed face, red throat, and red spots on the mouth, besides laboratory reports.

The official said that Yasin was hospitalized with a five-day history of constant and rising fever, four-day of vomiting and with two-day history of bleeding from various parts of the body.

Quoting some reports, he says the CCHF is a widespread tick-borne viral disease that can be transmitted either from wild animals or infected patients through direct contact with their blood or body fluids.

The disease is particularly common in East and West Africa and fatal in about 50 per cent of human cases which is an alarming ratio, he said.

The official said the patient needed immediate attention or constant follow up during the specified period — three to seven days — of the onset of the disease. Any delay in this regard can lead to a severe hemorrhagic syndrome or uncontrolled bleeding — called as extremely advanced stage of the deadly disease.

Shortly after receiving fresh victim of the tropical disease at Nishtar Hospital in Multan, health authorities issued directions to officials concerned to keep under observation family members of the diseased person and those who remained close to him during the entire period of the onset of the CCHF.

According to the laid down protocol, he said the health management should send blood samples of doctors and other staff, who provided treatment to the CCHF patient, as a preventive measure.

A separate team of health experts will also visit the ‘affected areas’ to gather epidemiological information and facts.

QUETTA - Deadly Congo virus has once again terrified people in Quetta as one patient suffering from the virus died in a hospital of the provincial capital on Wednesday.
As per details, a patient identified as Walid was admitted to the isolation ward of Fatima Jinnah General and Chest Hospital after he contracted Congo virus. Walid could not recover and breathed his last on the hospital?s bed. Family sources of Walid said he was working as a butcher at Frontier Corps Headquarters.
Fatima Jinnah General and Chest Hospital administration confirmed that several other patients with Congo virus were being treated in the hospital...

RAWALPINDI, Aug 16: Blood test reports have confirmed that a patient admitted to the Holy Family Hospital (HFH) on August 8 is suffering from Congo Crimean Haemorrhagic Fever (CCHF).

However, National Institute of Health (NIH) has cleared another patient, who was admitted on same date, of congo virus and she will likely to be discharged within next few days.

Congo virus-infected patients die in hospital

Friday, September 13, 2013 - Havelian?Two real brothers, who had been infected with Congo virus, died in hospitals on Thursday. According to hospital sources, Shahzad and Asif, who were infected with Congo virus, died in PIMS Hospital Islamabad and ATH Hospital Abbottabad respectively.

The third brother Asif and their father Yousuf have also been admitted in PIMS Hospital, Islamabad...

Health hazard: Five patients discharged from AMC after being cleared of Congo virus

ABBOTABAD: Five members of a family including three women suspected of being infected with Congo virus were discharged from Ayub Medical Complex (AMC) after initial medical reports revealed they were not suffering from the disease.

Four others from the same family, of which two have already died, had approached the hospital earlier this week in a related case...

...Muhammad Yousaf and his three sons Muhammad Asif, Shiraz and Muhammad Arif were brought to the hospital on Tuesday afternoon after they complained of stomach problems and high fever. However, they left soon after treatment started and went to Combined Military Hospital (CMH), Abbottabad where Asif, 27, died.

The other three were then referred to Military Hospital Rawalpindi, from where they were shifted to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences Islamabad (PIMS). Family and hospital sources confirmed Shiraz also died on Thursday morning, while Yousaf and his son Arif are presently being kept in isolation. Their blood samples have been sent to National Institute of Health (NIH). The tests will confirm whether the father and son are infected with Congo virus.

Abbottabad District Health Officer (DHO) Dr Zafeer said though Asif and Shiraz did not die at AMC, the initial reports he collected from PIMS suggest they may have been infected. ?The two remaining patients are being treated under the Congo virus protocol, although it is not yet confirmed whether they are suffering from the disease,? he added...

ISLAMABAD, Sept 15: Another Crimean Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (Congo fever) patient died at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) on Sunday.

According to sources, Arif Khan, 28, a resident of Abbottabad, was under treatment in the hospital since September 11.

According to a doctor of Pims, a few days back Shahzad Ahmed, 21, died of the deadly virus in Abbottabad. His brothers Shiraz Ahmed, 25, Arif Khan, 28, along with their father Mohammad Yousuf, 60, was brought to Pims where they died.

?All four patients belonged to the same family and were butchers. They had been in close contact with animals which resulted in the spread of the disease,? he said.

First Congo fever case in Hangu

HANGU: The Health Department officials on Wednesday said the first case of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever has been confirmed in Hangu district.Medical Superintendent of the District Headquarters Hospital, Dr Azam, said a 25-year-old butcher is suffering from Congo Crimean Haemorrhagic Fever (CCHF).

?Amanullah, a resident of Alwara Mela, was brought to the hospital and the doctors suspected that he has Congo fever. Therefore, his blood samples were sent for tests, which confirmed that he is a patient of the fever,? Dr Azam said.

He said that Amanullah was shifted to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences Islamabad for treatment. The doctor said a team of doctors and World Health Organisation visited Aman?s residence and collected blood samples of his family.

Since it was recognized for the first time in Pakistan in 1976, there have been a biannual surge of CCHF cases in the country. Cases usually appear between March and May and again between August and October. Furthermore, it has been shown that the disease is more prevalent in specific areas of Balochistan.

It was first death caused by the Congo fever in Punjab; however, the provincial health department has not so far confirmed diagnosis and today\'s death officially.

PESHAWAR: Two patients who tested positive for Congo virus were admitted to Hayatabad Medical Complex (HMC) on Monday.

An HMC official confirmed 39-year-old Basmena Bibi from Wazir Bagh was brought to HMC and kept in the isolation ward. Abdul Muhammad, 32, from Waziristan was also admitted with symptoms of the virus.

The official informed both patients were tested at Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi. The woman was later shifted to Islamabad for further treatment.

Another patient, Rafiullah, was admitted to Khyber Teaching Hospital (KTH) with symptoms of Congo virus, but was discharged after he tested negative...
