Three-year-old paralysed by polio in Bannu

ISLAMABAD: A distressing incident has occurred in Bannu, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where a three-year-old boy has been paralysed by wild poliovirus.

The child’s paralysis began on July 11 and the case was officially confirmed by the Pakistan National Polio Laboratory at the National Institute of Health in Islamabad on Tuesday, August 1. This marks the second polio case reported by Bannu.

Expressing concern over the situation, Federal Health Minister Abdul Qadir Patel said: “Another child in Bannu has been paralysed by wild poliovirus. This three-year-old child will have to live with disabilities for the rest of his life due to a virus that is entirely preventable, which is truly tragic.”

He said that Pakistan has made a significant progress in combating polio, especially after the outbreak in North Waziristan last April. However, even one affected child is too many, and every child deserves a life free from this incurable disease...

ISLAMABAD, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- One more wild poliovirus infection has been detected in Lahore, the capital city of Pakistan's eastern Punjab province, the country's health ministry said Saturday.

This is the fourth polio case confirmed this year in Lahore, the ministry said in a statement.

Three of the four polio cases in Lahore have been genetically linked to a cluster of infections in Afghanistan, said the statement.​..

Health minister says this is the third case from the same union of council of Bannu; urges parents to make sure their children are vaccinated in ongoing nationwide polio drive.

Islamabad, October 3, 2023 – A child has been paralyzed by wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) in Bannu, bringing the number of polio cases in Pakistan this year to three.

The Pakistan Polio Laboratory at the National Institute of Health notified on Tuesday that the affected child is an 18-months-old girl from Ghaura Baka Khel union council of Bannu, who had onset of paralysis on September 13.​..

Fifth polio case surfaces in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Health on Saturday reported that a 31-month-old child had been diagnosed with polio in Karachi, marking the fifth case in Pakistan this year.

The health ministry has confirmed that the polio virus was found in a 31-month-old child from UC Gujro in Gadap Town of Karachi East.

Caretaker Minister for Health Dr. Nadeem Jan said that steps are being taken on an emergency basis to eradicate polio.

On November 2, the Ministry of Health confirmed that the polio virus had been found in the environmental sample in Karachi district of Sindh.​..

LAKKI MARWAT: A policeman was killed and another critically injured in separate attacks in Bannu on Wednesday.

The fresh attacks took place 24 hours after a cop escorting a polio team was shot at and injured by armed motorcyclists in Lalozai area of the district.

A police official said Mohammad Ashraf, a Frontier Reserve Police head constable, was on way to the place of his deployment for polio duty when miscreants opened fire at him.

He said the cop came under attack in Sabukhel locality, leaving him critically injured. He was shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital, wherefrom he was referred to Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar, in precarious condition, the official said...

ISLAMABAD: While Pakistan has reported a sixth case of polio during the current year, 20 more environmental samples have tested positive for the virus of crippling disease.

A nine-month-old fema­­le child has been paralysed by poliovirus, bringing the number of cases reported this year to six.

The Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Era­dication at the National Institute of Health (NIH) has notified that the virus was detected in a nine-month-old child from Orakzai district.

“I am deeply saddened that this virus has robbed yet another child of the opportunity to live a healthy life and to live up to its potential,” said Federal Minister for Health Dr Nadeem Jan.​...
