21-year-old loses life to Naegleria fowleri in Karachi

KARACHI Health authorities on Friday urged people to avoid swimming after a 21-year-old passed away due to Naegleria fowleri in Karachi.

Amid rising temperatures people in the metropolis have been heading out for a swim to get relief from the heat but Naegleria fowleri is quite prevalent due to the low quantity of chlorine in the pool.

According to Director Health Karachi, Dr Abdul Hameed Jumani, the young man, who passed away due to the disease, was a resident of Defense area of Karachi.

As per Dr Jumani the 21-year-old had gone for a swim at a private defense academy and had reported of fever. However, his situation worsened and he was admitted to a hospital on June 18 and eventually lost his life on July 6 ...​

According to the Sindh Health Department, a 45-year-old resident of Buffer Zone was admitted to a private hospital on November 1.

This year, the number of deaths due to naegleria has increased to 11.

According to the Sindh Health Department, a 45-year-old resident of Buffer Zone was diagnosed with naegleria in a PCR test.

As per the record, one person each from Jamshoro, Kemari, Korangi, Malir, Gharbi and East districts has died, while two deaths have been reported in South district of Karachi.

This year so far, eight deaths have been reported from naegleria in Sindh. The latest victim has been identified as Adnan Tariq, 45, a resident of North Karachi. Out of the eight people who died of the disease this year, five belonged to Karachi, and one each to Hyderabad, Mirpur Khas, and Quetta.

​Naegleria fowleri or brain-eating bug has claimed one more life in Karachi as a 38-year old man died due to complications of primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) at a private hospital during treatment.

So far, 12 people have lost their lives due to primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) caused by Naegleria fowleri in Karachi this year, officials said on Saturday. They advised people to get their underground and overhead water tanks cleaned and use chlorine tablets to disinfect the water as the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) had failed to supply safe water to the citizens.​..

As many as 11 people died due to Primary Amoebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM) caused by Naegleria fowleri, two due to Congo Crimean Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF), while two deaths were reported due to Malaria in Sindh in 2023, as stated by the Sindh health department on Saturday.​..
