Dengue fever: Boy from Islamabad dies at Pindi hospital

RAWALPINDI: A young boy, who had been suffering from dengue fever, reportedly died of a lung infection at the Holy Family Hospital (HFH) on Tuesday.

He is the fifth person to die while suffering from the viral fever in the garrison city this year. However, he is the first patient from Islamabad to die in Rawalpindi.

Abdul Rehman, 11, came to the HFH from Bahara Kahu in Islamabad after complaining of having lung trouble.

No let-up in dengue fever outbreak

The dengue fever outbreak is continuing to hit population in town in its most intense phase and the trend of incidence of the infection hints that the concerned authorities have failed in checking spread of the infection and the outbreak would only be wiped out by fall in temperature like and past.

The outbreak has claimed another life here at Holy Family Hospital in last one week taking the total number of deaths due to the infection at the HFH to four. The allied hospitals in town have been receiving well over 70 confirmed patients of dengue fever per day on average for the last 10 days and the number did not show any decline.

Data collected by ?The News? on Saturday reveals that in last seven days, the three teaching hospitals tested as many as 517 patients positive for dengue fever taking the total number of patients confirmed positive for the infection this year at the allied hospitals to 1922.

Also no reduction in influx of patients visiting dengue fever outpatients departments at the allied hospitals has been witnessed for the last three weeks...

As many as 38 new cases of dengue fever have been confirmed at the three public hospitals of the garrison city on Tuesday as the combined toll for the virus in the twin cities topped 2,000.

Health officials, meanwhile, have warned that owing to warmer temperatures, the dengue season could prevail a while longer, while doctors are concerned about the large influx of patients from Islamabad...

...With the new confirmations, the number of confirmed dengue cases reported in the garrison city this year has risen to 2,205. Out of these cases, 803 cases came from Rawalpindi and other cities, but 1,402 patients came from Islamabad alone. This imbalance has caused concern among health officials...

The incidence of Dengue Shock Syndrome and Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever has been recording a great increase this year among patients of dengue fever being tested positive and it is alarming that nearly 30 per cent of all patients tested positive for dengue fever here at the three teaching hospitals in town suffered either from DHF or DSS.

Data collected by ?The News? reveals that till November 1 this year, the allied hospitals in town received a total of 2,601 confirmed patients of dengue fever of which as many as 782 suffered DHF, while 51 contracted DSS. The on-going severe outbreak of dengue fever has claimed at least seven lives at the allied hospitals this year...

106 tested positive in last three days;
1,830 plus cases so far tested positive from federal capital

Islamabad

The on-going most severe dengue fever outbreak in the history of federal capital has claimed two more lives in a private hospital in Islamabad, while as many as 106 more patients have been tested positive from Islamabad in last three days taking the total number of patients so far confirmed positive for the infection to 1830 this year.

According to details, two patients died of dengue fever at Shifa International Hospital in town of which one was taken to the hospital from Sargodha, while the other was a resident of Islamabad. I have been notified of the two deaths due to dengue fever by the administration of SIH three days back, said Additional District Health Officer at Islamabad Capital Territory Health Department Dr. Muhammad Najeeb Durrani while talking to ?The News? on Monday.

He, however, claimed that the number of patients of dengue fever being reported from the federal capital is on decline due to fall in temperature and on average, less than 35 patients are being reported daily from Islamabad these days. ?Earlier the number was above 70,? he said...

47 more dengue fever cases were detected in Karachi within a week, taking the patients toll to 1,711 in the city since 1st January 2016...

...In 2016, a total of 2,099 dengue fever cases were reported in Sindh since 1st January 2016, out of which 1,711 were detected from Karachi, 211 from Mithi or Tharparkar, 101 from Hyderabad, 12 from Sukkur, 8 from Tando Muhammad Khan, 7 each from Ghotki & Jamshoro, 6 from Larkana, 5 from Mirpurkhas & Khairpur, 4 each from Naushero Feroz, Umer Kot, Shaheed Benazirabad & Shikarpur, 3 each from Dadu & Thatta, 2 each from Badin and Sanghar.

A total of three deaths have been reported due to dengue fever in the province so far, out of which two were from Karachi and one was from Shaheed Benazirabad, and the last could not be confirmed by health officials.

Intensity of dengue fever on decline in federal capital

2,416 confirmed positive so far with 3 deaths -- a history in the making

Islamabad

The number of confirmed patients of dengue fever being reported in the federal capital has been on a decline for the last one week however, confirmation of 2,416 patients so far reported from Islamabad can be termed a history in the making as the population here has never faced such a severe outbreak of dengue fever in the past.

The infection, this year has claimed at least three lives in the federal capital, two in rural areas and one in Islamabad urban which is also a new record. It is important that less than 1,500 patients in all have been reported in the federal capital since the first outbreak of dengue fever in northern part of the country, in last 10 years.

The on-going dengue fever outbreak can be termed as the most severe in the history of federal capital but now the situation is completely under control and the number of confirmed patients is on decline, said Additional District Health Officer at Islamabad Capital Territory Health Department Dr. Muhammad Najeeb Durrani while talking to ?The News? on Thursday...

The sharp fall in mercury particularly in last two weeks in this region of the country has almost faded away the dengue fever outbreak that has badly hit population in the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi this year though the three teaching hospitals in town are still receiving 10 to 20 confirmed patients of the infection per day on average.

Data collected by ?The News? on Monday has revealed that the three allied hospitals in town received nearly 300 confirmed cases of dengue fever within last two weeks while in last three days, not more than 50 cases have been reported at the teaching hospitals in town that makes less than 20 patients per day on average, whereas the allied hospitals were receiving 40 to 50 confirmed patients per day on average some two weeks back.

To date, the three teaching hospitals have tested as many as 3,250 patients positive for the infection of which nearly 60 per cent, well over 2,000, are residents of the federal capital...

Within last 24 hours, the allied hospitals tested as many as 14 patients of dengue fever positive while admitted as many as 24 new cases including probable cases of the infection...

Dengue returns with a vengeance

After a lull of three years, dengue returned to the capital with a vengeance this year as patients continued to suffer at institutions crumbling under the patient-load and dilapidated infrastructure.

During 2016, 3,340 cases of the viral fever were reported in Rawalpindi?s hospital, while seven related deaths took place. This, officials said was down from 5,000 cases and 10 deaths in 2015.

However, the vast majority of these cases were from Islamabad which accounted for 2,755 cases.

The vast majority of these cases, around 2,460, were reported from the rural areas surrounding the capital but fall under the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT). Only a fraction, 295 cases, were reported from the urban sectors with three deaths.

According to data compiled by hospitals, especially those in Rawalpindi, Tarlai and Rawat reported the most cases with 693 and 603 cases respectively till December 22. Other areas where high numbers of cases were reported included 407 from Sohan, 358 from Koral, and 232 from Bhara Kahu...
