Police find body of kidnapped health worker

PESHAWAR (Pakistan): Police Monday found the bullet-riddled body of a kidnapped female health worker dumped in a field in northwest Pakistani on Monday, an official said.

Salma Ghani, about 32 years old, was taken by five unidentified men from outside her house in Peshawar, the main city in northwest Pakistan, on Sunday.

Senior police official Rahim Shah told AFP Ghani?s body had been recovered from a wheat field on the edge of the city. She had been shot several times, he said...

ISLAMABAD - Three new wild type-1 polio cases on Thursday were confirmed from North Waziristan Agency taking the total count of the cases to 39.

The National Institute of Health has confirmed the polio cases from North Waziristan at a time when the World Health Organization has formally declared India polio-free.

Muhammad, son of Ghaisuddin, five months old male child, resident of village Mama Khel, Tehsil Mir Ali, was paralyzed with the virus as he was given no dose of the vaccine. Sabeer Ullah, son of Rasool Ghani, a 13 months old male child, resident of village Piran Kalla, tehsil Miran Shah, also missed the polio vaccine drops.

Muhammad Murad, son of Afsa Noor, a 14 months old male child, resident of village Nari Kalla, Tehsil Razmak, also contracted the virus as he could not be vaccinated.

So far total polio count has reached 39 and among them 33 cases have surfaced from FATA (NWA 30, SWA 01, Khyber 01, FR Bannu 01), 5 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Peshawar 03, Bannu 02) and 1 from Sindh (Baldia Karachi). There is an outbreak like situation in NWA as children in areas have remained inaccessible for the past two years due to the imposed ban on the vaccination drive...

PESHAWAR: As World Health Day was being marked on Monday, three new polio cases were reported from North Waziristan Agency (NWA) that took the number of detected polio cases in Pakistan to 43 this year.

According to sources in the Prime Minister?s Polio Monitoring and Coordination Cell, laboratory confirmed wild poliovirus (type-1) in the tribal agency wracked by Taliban-led militancy. Poliovirus has turned endemic in North Waziristan Agency as this year alone 33 cases of polio (76.7percent of total) were detected in the agency. Three cases this year have already been reported from the neighbouring Bannu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This situation has been hobbling government efforts to purge the country of the disease...

KARACHI: Sindh recorded another case of polio ? second of the year ? in the past one month, again in a 22-month-old girl belonging to an Afghan family settled in the western fringes of the city, officials confirmed on Saturday.

?We have received confirmation from the National Institute of Health (NIH) in Islamabad and the World Health Organisation about the poliovirus detected in a 22-month-old girl,? said a health department official overseeing polio issues in Orangi Town.

He identified the girl as Jameela, daughter of Gul Noor, an Afghan refugee and labourer settled in Karachi.

PESHAWAR: Only a day after Peshawar had reported its fourth polio case during the current year, two more polio cases just in a single day were reported from the volatile Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) on Thursday.

The polio virology laboratory (PVL) confirmed the two new polio cases that took the total number of polio cases during the current year to 52.

According to sources in the Chief Minister Secretariat in Peshawar, Pakistan had only reported six polio cases during the same corresponding period last year, whereas this year, they said, the number had already touched half of a century just in four months...
