Dengue claims life of young boy

KARACHI: A four-year-old boy suffering from dengue fever died at a hospital, shocking health official as it was the first dengue death in a wintry month since the deadly virus surfaced in the city in 2005, the provincial health authorities confirmed to Dawn on Thursday.
The patient belonging to a family from the Malir neighbourhood had been admitted to a private hospital early this week.?He was admitted to the hospital on Feb 3 and died the same day because of serious complications,? said an official in the provincial dengue surveillance cell.
He added that there was a slight variation in signs and symptoms of dengue in young and adult victims. ?For instance, they might complain of diarrhoea and gastroenteritis with fever, eating disorder and abdominal pain,? he said.
This year, when February has just started, the figure of confirmed dengue cases has already reached 86, health officials said, while adding that in the last year?s first two months 60 patients had been detected with dengue virus in Sindh. The officials said last year the first death from the virus was reported on May 30.
