Increase in measles in eastern Balochistan

"Cases of measles are on the increase in east Balochistan, says M?decins Sans Fronti?res (MSF). An MSF medical team in Dera Murad Jamali has treated 159 patients since late December; while there have been two measles-related deaths in health facilities supported by MSF in Jaffarabad and Nasirabad districts.

To cope with the increasing number of patients, an eight-bed isolation unit has been set up in Dera Murad Jamali hospital to treat patients with complications. Some 35 complicated cases have been treated over the past two weeks...".

Special Assistant to the Chief Minister on Health Khawaja Salman Rafique said on Tuesday that 2,971 cases of measles have been reported in the province since December 2012.

ANOTHER child died of measles at Mayo Hospital on Tuesday, which brought the death toll to 11 in Lahore so far.One-and-a-half year old Babar died of measles at Mayo Hospital. The administration of the hospital confirmed the casualty.

Besides, as many as 20 new cases of measles have been admitted to different public and private hospitals of Lahore on Tuesday, which raised the reported cases to 553 so far...

Measles, a deadly childhood disease but preventable by immunisation, claimed over 130 lives in Pakistan, mostly in Sindh, last month ? a situation alarming according to the World Health Organisation.

As shown in the WHO figures seen by this scribe, measles deaths reported in Pakistan from January 1 to January 26, 2013 totalled 131, including 79 in Sindh, 38 in Balochistan, six in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab each, and one in Islamabad and tribal areas bordering Afghanistan each.

No one from Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir tested positive for the highly contagious viral disease, which produces small red spots all over the body and causes death.

In previous years, too, many children lost life to measles.

Over 300 children died of measles in 2012 and 64 in 2011. Most of these cases were reported in Sindh ravaged by floods...

51 new cases of measles in Lahore

"LAHORE: Fifty-one new measles patients were admitted to public and private hospitals of Lahore on Saturday.


It has raised the number of child patients suffering from measles to 772, who were admitted to public and private hospitals of Lahore. At least 11 deaths have been reported in Lahore so far."

LAHORE: The Health Department of the Punjab Government has said that 142 more cases of measles have been reported in the province, FP news desk reported on Tuesday.

Out of the 142, at least 50 patients were reported from Lahore.

The overall toll has mounted to 3678 in the province so far...

The number of measles-related deaths is surging in Pakistan, especially in Sindh province, with health experts blaming it on poor immunisation.

According to World Health Organisation (WHO), measles, a deadly childhood disease, but preventable by immunisation, claimed 131 lives in the country from January 1 to January 26, 2013.

However, the count jumped to 154 by February 2, alarming experts, who fear an epidemic-like situation.

Of the 154 measles-related deaths, the most (93) were reported in Sindh followed by 49 in Balochistan, 12 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and eight in Punjab, and one in Islamabad and tribal areas bordering Afghanistan each...

There is no let-up in the deaths caused by measles in the country, as 15 more children have died of the highly contagious viral disease.

According to World Health Organisation, the number of this year?s measles-related deaths, which was 154 by February 2, has surged to 169 within a week by February 9.

Of these deaths, the most (96) were reported in Sindh followed by 42 in Balochistan, 15 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and 14 in Punjab, and one in Islamabad and tribal areas bordering Afghanistan each.

Tuesday, February 26, 2013 - Multan?Five more patients of measles were reported on Monday who were admitted to Nishtar Medical Institute and Children Complex. District Coordinator for Prevention and Control Programme of epidemics Dr Ata ur Rehman told APP that they included Shah Zaman, 14 months, from district Khanewal, Maria, six months, from district Multan, Qasim Ali, 5, from DG Khan district, Sidra, 2, from Muzaffargarh district and Rabia, 3, from district Khanewal were reported as suspected cases.
