Anti-polio campaign: Four suspected polio cases reported in Mansehra

Four cases of Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) have been reported from Oghi in Mansehra District, official sources told The Express Tribune on Monday. The cases were detected during the ongoing campaign for eradication of poliomyelitis and reported in the monthly surveillance report of health authorities.

Officials said that the cases were detected during routine surveillance of children below 15 years of age with symptoms of paralytic illness and the patients were kept under observation. The most recent case was that of Sehrish Bibi, 6, daughter of Qalandar Shah of Kanotri village...

A special committee, formed by the federal government to ascertain the origin of a disputed confirmed case of polio, has declared that the three-year-old patient who stayed in Rawalpindi for over two years contracted the disease in Bajaur Agency.

Executive District Officer (Health) Dr. Zafar Iqbal Gondal told ?The News? on Sunday that the National Steering Committee (NSC) on Polio, being headed by Shahnaz Wazir Ali, has conveyed the findings to the District Health Department, Rawalpindi. He said that the District Health Department, Rawalpindi, had refused to own the case on technical grounds and after the decision of the committee its stance has been proven true.

According to details, on September 10 this year, the National Institute of Health (NIH), Islamabad, had confirmed three-year-old Sanaullah, son of Shamsul Haq, positive for polio who stayed in Rawalpindi at his uncle?s house for nearly two years but his sample was sent to the NIH from Bajaur Agency Health Department. The District Health Department, Rawalpindi, refused to own the case taking plea that the epidemiological number for testing of stool of the patient was not issued by it instead it was issued by the Bajaur Agency Health Department that proves that at least for 15 days before the onset of symptoms of polio, the patient stayed in Bajaur Agency.

The District Health Department, Rawalpindi, and the Punjab Health Department had refused to own the confirmed case of polio and taken the matter to the federal government for proper investigation into the matter...

Two new polio cases reported in K-P, Fata

PEHSAWAR: Two new polio cases were reported on Tuesday in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata).

The Expanded Programme for Immunisation (EPI) confirmed reports of a new polio case in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) on Tuesday. The deputy director of the EPI in K-P, Dr Janbaz Afridi, told The Express Tribune that an 18-month-old boy had been infected with the polio virus. The child, Asad Khan, hails from Ashezo Mera village in district Buner.

Dr Afridi also said that the child had been administered more than seven doses of the vaccine since his birth on May 17, 2011.

In the second polio case reported, 24-month-old Muslim Khan from Khan Kallay in Jamrud, Khyber Agency was confirmed to have type P1 of the polio virus. Dr Afridi said that the area was ‘accessible’ but the child had so far only received one dose of the vaccination.

The new cases bring the total number of polio cases across Pakistan to 51. The majority of these cases are reported in K-P and the Fata, with 20 and 19 polio cases reported from each of the areas respectively...

LANDIKOTAL: The Khyber Agency Surgeon Dr Samin Wednesday said the National Institute of Health (NIH) Islamabad has not confirmed the fresh polio case.

?We have yet to receive the report from the NIH. We can confirm it only after receiving the report from the NIH,? he added.

There were reports in the media that two-year old Muslim was found positive for polio in Khyber Agency...

Performance gaps: ?New strain of polio virus result of poor coverage?

The Prime Minister?s polio cell, the World Health Organisation (WHO), and the United Nations Children?s Fund (UNICEF) confirmed that a newly-found strain of the polio virus is the result of persistently low Routine Immunisation (RI) coverage in the Pishin and Qilla Abdullah districts of Balochistan.

The virus has been confirmed in four children in Qilla Abdullah and one in Pishin, according to a joint statement issued on Thursday.

The release stated that ?cVDPV (Type 2)? cases are due to poor routine immunisation coverage that may cause type 2 poliovirus to mutate and attain a form that can cause paralysis after passing through multiple children in environments with substandard sanitation.

?The cVDPV (Type 2) is an extremely rare strain of the polio virus that has been isolated in other parts of the world in countries with low RI coverage such as Somalia and Nigeria,? stated WHO Senior Coordinator for Polio Eradication Dr Elias Durry.

According to the WHO, cVDPVs (Type 2) can be rapidly finished with two to three rounds of high quality, targeted polio campaigns. Outbreak response strategies are the same for all strains: immunise every child under the age of five years several times with OPV to stop polio transmission, through polio campaigns and improvement of routine immunisation coverage.

According to the Prime Minister?s Polio Monitoring and Coordination Cell, the discovery of the new cases highlights serious performance gaps resulting in children being persistently missed in different areas of the country...

KARACHI, Nov 21: Karachi reported its first polio case of the year on Wednesday, when the national health authorities confirmed poliovirus in an 18-month-old boy living in UC 11 of Liaquatabad, bringing the total number of cases reported in the province to five this year.

The director of the expanded programme on immunisation, however, said that since the victim had the history of travelling to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the results of genetic sequencing were being awaited from the World Health Organisation to decide the time and place of the onset of the dreaded disease in the child.

?What I have been told is that the minor boy had been in Mardan district of the KPK for many days. There was a chance that the onset of the disease might have taken place in the KPK and as such this case would not be included in Sindh?s tally of polio cases,? he said.

He added that despite all odds Sindh performance about poliovirus eradication could be held far better than that of the last year, when there were 33 cases, including nine reported in Karachi, in the province.

A week after the city reported the year?s first polio case, sources in the World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Tuesday the polio virus was active in the Gadap area.

WHO collects environmental samplings of sewage in the metropolis every three months, and this time the results have showed that, the polio virus is active in Gadap Town.

On November 21 health authorities had confirmed the virus in an 18-month-old boy in Liaquatabad. The discovery brought the number of cases detected in Sindh this year to five.

However, officials were unsure if the child had contracted the crippling disease in Karachi or in Mardan, as his parents used to travel to Mardan every two to three months...

GHALANAI: Mohmand Agency recorded the first polio case of the year as National Institute of Health Islamabad confirmed on Tuesday presence of poliomyelitis in a 14-month-old vaccinated child.Agency Surgeon Dr Farooq Shah told Dawn that Hafsa, the affected child, belonged Pandiali tehsil of the tribal region. He said that they would focus on the area from where the case was reported.

The number of polio cases in Fata reached to 20 in 2012 after Hafsa, daughter of Hameedullah, a resident of Dawazai Inzari Maingan in Pandiali tehsil, was diagnosed positive for the crippling disease.

Sources in health department said that the child was infected by P1 type of virus that originated from Afghanistan. They said that health experts were surprised to note that the children, who were administered oral polio vaccine, were being tested positive for the disease...

Despite constant vaccination campaigns elsewhere in Pakistan, polio is rising in the militancy-hit Northwest Pakistan, since two more cases of polio were reported in the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and the adjacent tribal areas in the past week.

Last week the National Institute of Health in Islamabad confirmed two cases of polio, one in Mohmand tribal Agency and the other in Mardan district of Khyber Pakhunkhwa province...

QUETTA: Three more polio cases have been reported in Killa Abdullah district of Balochistan on Friday as the report of Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) of the Global Polio Eradication banned Pakistanis from travelling abroad without confirmation of vaccination against poliovirus.

A six-member World Health Organisation (WHO) delegation, comprising of four international and two national experts, led by Muhammadi Muhammad came to Quetta to find polio cases in Balochistan.

Muhammad told media that at least four cases of polio have been reported in the province, three of them on November 29 in Killa Abdullah district. He identified two causes for spread of poliovirus ? rear virus of polio and the delay of polio campaign...

With the Independent Monitoring Board recommending travel restrictions on polio endemic countries, reports of the transmission of a newly-discovered poliovirus strain from Pakistan to Afghanistan is likely to complicate an already tough situation for Islamabad.

Two Afghan children, living close to the border with Pakistan, have been paralysed by the Sabin Like (2) poliomyelitis, officials in the Polio Programme told The Express Tribune. The cases were reported from Afghanistan?s Kandahar province two days ago ? one in Panjwai district and the other in Spin Boldak, they added. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has confirmed the two new cases.

According to the officials, genetic sequencing has confirmed the new polio strain originated in Balochistan?s Killa Abdullah district. They said Sabin Like (2) poliomyelitis develops in children with an extremely poor record of routine immunisation ? a situation rampant in Balochistan...

The outbreak of a hitherto unknown strain of polio virus in Qilla Abdullah and Pishin has set alarm bells ringing and prompted the centre to ask the Balochistan government to launch an anti-polio campaign in the province within 30 days.

Ten cases of the new virus, named ?Sabin-like type 2 poliovirus?, were reported in two Pakhtun-dominated districts of the province over the past three weeks.

?The districts are frequented by people from the troubled areas of Fata. The situation is grim because of refusal by parents to get their children vaccinated against the crippling disease as the areas are under the influence of extremist groups opposed to the anti-polio drive.

LAHORE, Dec 10: After Karachi, Peshawar and Hyderabad, two major cities of Punjab ? Lahore and Rawalpindi ? have also turned ?polio-endemic? due to continuous detection of the wild poliovirus virus type-1 in the sewage samples collected from there.

The disturbing facts regarding persistence of the virus in the environment of Lahore and Rawalpindi were revealed in the report compiled by the World Health Organization, a copy of which is available with Dawn.

The statistics (from 2009 to Nov 2012) on the ?status? of wild poliovirus in major cities of the country, revealed that all efforts and strategies launched to counter the crippling disease in the country have failed as the virus persisted in the environment of these major cities.

The fresh sewage samples collected by the WHO experts on 12th Nov from two locations of the Punjab capital were again found positive for the wild poliovirus.

Except October, sewage samples collected from Lahore during the last nine months had been found positive for poliovirus when tested by the National Institute of Health, Islamabad...

QUETTA: The exertions of the Balochistan government to save the children from the crippling polio disease have turned abortive as at least 10 new cases of the crippling virus, like that of two-year-old Sabin, have been reported in the province in the last few weeks.

Of them nine cases have been reported from the districts of Kila Abdullah Khan and one from Pishin, officials of the World Health Organization (WHO) confided while talking to The News on Wednesday.Apart from this four cases of wild polio virus of type 1 that had been reported in the province this year. Official sources confided that on Wednesday last, the last day of the first of three special anti-polio campaigns, 7,530 families refused to administer the anti-polio drops to their children in Quetta, Kila Abdullah and Pishin districts. Of them, 2,794 families refused at Quetta, 2,788 refusal cases reported at Pishin, while 1,948 families refused in Kila Abdullah.

It is worth mentioning here that the infectious disease has been eliminated in developed nations but persists in parts of Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Pakistan reported 56 cases of the crippling virus in 2012 that had been reduced from 199 in 2011, while Afghanistan has reported 38. Most of the Afghan and Pakistani cases have occurred along their porous border.

Karachi: Director Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) Dr. Mazhar Ali Khamisani on Monday said that after the murder of World Health Organisation (WHO) volunteer in Gadap Town area of Karachi, a metropolitan of Pakistan, polio vaccination has been cancelled in the area.

Mazhar said that the vaccination was cancelled in the area after fatal murder of WHO volunteer Umar Farooq. “The anti-polio campaign will remain ongoing throughout province including Karachi,” he added...

KARACHI (Reuters) - Gunmen shot dead six health workers on an anti-polio drive in a string of attacks in Pakistan over 24 hours, officials said on Tuesday, raising fears for the future of efforts to eradicate the crippling disease in one of its last strongholds.

It was not clear who was behind the shootings but Taliban insurgents have repeatedly denounced the vaccination campaign, which aims to wipe out polio in one of the last three countries where it is endemic, as a Western plot...

Pakistan polio campaign hit by fresh deadly attacks

PESHAWAR, Pakistan ? Gunmen in Pakistan mounted fresh attacks Wednesday on health workers carrying out polio vaccinations, taking the death toll to eight and prompting UNICEF and WHO to suspend work on a campaign opposed by the Taliban.

Pakistan is one of only three countries in the world where polio is still endemic. But efforts to stamp out the crippling disease have been hampered by resistance from the Taliban, who have banned vaccination teams from some areas.

Eight people working to immunise children against the highly infectious disease have been shot dead in Pakistan since the start of a three-day UN-backed nationwide vaccination campaign on Monday.

In the latest attack Wednesday, a female health worker and her driver were shot dead in Charsadda near Peshawar, the main town in the northwest, police official Wajid Khan told AFP. A second police officer confirmed the incident.

Another worker was shot and critically wounded while giving out polio drops earlier on Wednesday on the outskirts of Peshawar...
