KARACHI: As the World Health Organisation appears discouraged from taking further part in future polio eradication campaigns in the city, a new report released by the organisation on Sunday points out that researchers discovered high traces of the poliovirus in sewage samples of several towns in the city.

The discovery is considered to be correlated with inability of teams to visit certain areas due to the tumultuous law and order situation in the city.

The WHO report mentions that the virus reemerged in Sohrab Goth, Badin, Gadap Town, Hyderabad city and Sukkur, which raises questions about the outbreak of the disease beyond Karachi...

It is a little too soon for Pakistan to be bragging about a decline in the number of polio cases. With the confirmation of two new cases on Wednesday, the country?s national polio case count has risen to 29 so far this year.

The new polio victims are 19-month-old Safina, daughter of Omar Zada, and 8-month-old Basituallah, son of Hussain Sher. The children belong to Charsadda and Peshawar, respectively.

CHARSADDA, Aug 13: A polio case has been detected in Takya Korona Muftiabad area on the outskirts of Charsadda city.

District health communication officer Mohammad Yasir told Dawn on Monday that the polio sufferer was 19-month-old girl Safeena, who belonged to Dir district and currently lived in Takya Korona Muftiabad area with her family.

He said the girl was vaccinated against polio 15 times...

CURRENT EPIDEMIOLOGY OF POLIO IN PAKISTAN

As of the 15th August, a total of twenty nine wild poliovirus (WPV) cases (26 type-1, 2 type-3 and 1 mixed type-1 & type-3) have been reported from sixteen districts/tribal agencies in 2012. Moreover WPV-1 has also been isolated from 48 out of 119 environmental samples (of the available results) collected from large urban populations in four major provinces indicating the continued widespread circulation of wild poliovirus in year 2012.

Eleven polio cases in 2012 had date of onset of paralysis in January, three in February, one each in March and April, six in May, two in June and five in July.

The genetic data of the polio cases in 2012 so far indicates that one genetic cluster of WPV-1 (A3D2B) is present in all the 4 major provinces and most dominant both in AFP and environmental samples. Maximum biodiversity of the WPV-1 is in FATA and DIP

Key characteristics of polio cases in 2012 so far:

Twenty three polio cases are younger than two years. Median age of confirmed polio cases is 13 months.
Based on recall of parents: a) median number of OPV doses received by the polio cases is 3 in the areas with no access issues and zero (0) for areas with major access issues in FATA; b) fourteen did not receive any OPV dose (through routine vaccination and / or campaigns); c) three cases received 1-3 OPV doses; d) four cases received 4-6 OPV doses; e) Eight received seven or more OPV doses; and f) Twenty three did not receive any routine OPV dose. Three cases missed OPV doses due to refusal of the family.

PESHAWAR: A few days after the administration of newly-created Torghar district appreciated the Unicef?s partner organisation, the National Research and Development Foundation (NRDF), for its effective strategies to contain the poliovirus, a new polio case was reported from there on Wednesday.

The National Institute of Health (NIH) in Islamabad confirmed the presence of the new crippling P1 virus in 10-month-old child Aneesa, throwing cold water on tall claims of the district administration in favour of NRDF team members.

The family has been living in Dheera Koh village of Torghar for the past five months. The child?s samples sent to the national virology laboratory at the NIH showed she had recently contracted the poliovirus.

11-year-old girl contracts polio in Mardan

MARDAN, Sept 13: In an unusual development, an 11-year-old girl was tested positive for crippling disease of polio in Mardan district, according to officials.

?Commonly polio affects children of five years or below it. It is surprising to see an 11-year-old girl affected by polio,? an official said. The first-ever overage polio case, which is 33rd in the current year in the country, is being viewed as an alarm for the planners and donor agencies, who had hitherto focused on children up to 60 months.

The official said that National Institute of Health (NIH), Islamabad had communicated to the district health authorities about the new case.

According to the laboratory report, Tasmina, daughter of Mohammad Ajmal, a resident of Tila Khan Kallay, Takht Bhai, was tested positive for polio virus. The girl was suffering from low-immunity, the official said.

He said that a strong surveillance system by district health management was praiseworthy because it recorded the new case with the victim having more than fiver years of age.

PESHAWAR: The recent polio case believed to have been detected in Rawalpindi has become a bone of contention between the officials of the Health Department in Rawalpindi and Bajaur Agency.



Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Social Sector Shahnaz Wazir Ali said the case was detected in Rawalpindi. However, the executive district officer (EDO) health, Rawalpindi insisted that the child got infected in Bajaur.



Shahnaz Wazir Ali called for serious steps to ascertain the origin of the virus that led to the polio case. ?At the end of the day, it is our child who has been a victim of poliovirus, so we need to make joint efforts to sort out the matter,? she said.

MIRPURKHAS: The WHO and the provincial health department rushed to a village in Tharparkar the area to collect samples as they feared at least four children have been apparently detected with polio virus.

Sources in health department said that the children aged between three to six years residing in Jinan Junejo village, UC Mahrano of district Tharparkar, have apparently signs and symptoms of polio and feared that the water being consumed by villagers was contaminated. The suspected polio patients were identified as Majeedan, 3, Uzma, 4, Shahjahan, 4 and Hakim Ali, 6. All belong to Junejo tribe in the village...

The polio count in the country went up to 37 in this year when on Friday another case surfaced- this time in Charsadda District of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa as the National Institute of Health (NIH) in Islamabad confirmed the virus in an eight-month-old child.

Stool and blood samples of Muhibullah of Sarak Konoona in Dera Zardad union council, were sent to the NIH after he was suspected of contracting polio. The NIH later confirmed the child was infected with the type-1 virus...

PESHAWAR: Two new polio cases each from Fata and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has taken the National polio case count to 40.

On Thursday, The National Institute of Health confirmed the presence of polio virus in 36 month old Maria, daughter of Tajbudin from Upper Dir. She was a resident of village Palai Baba from union council Barawal Bandai and had received three doses of the polio vaccine.

The second polio case was reported in 18 months old Saya, daughter of Mohammad Rahim, from Kurram Agency.She is a resident of central Kurram area Marghan Kurram and had received no dose of the polio vaccine.

Last year during the same corresponding period, Pakistan had recorded a total of 106 polio cases and this year with confirmed 40 polio cases, Pakistan is recording a reduction in the number of cases in comparison to last year...
