Within three days of the start of the New Year, two children from Balochistan, including a girl, have tested positive for polio.

And if these cases are anything to go by, then the year seems to be no different from the previous one, which reported 181 cases against the previous year?s count of 144. Ironically, the two children inhabit Balochistan?s western Pashtun belt notorious for high polio incidence...

PESHAWAR: Two more polio cases have emerged in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Federally Administered Tribal Areas, pushing the toll in Pakistan to 191 cases as of January 5, 2012.

According to a report of the Polio Monitoring and Coordination Cell, Islamabad, one case each was reported in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Fata in December...

ISLAMABAD ? The number of polio cases continues to rise as three new type-1 cases have been confirmed by National Institute of Health from the samples collected in December last year.

According to officials still more samples are pending so there could be more cases that could raise polio count of 2011. Samples tested positive for polio received during 2011 will continue to be part of the 2011 tally for the next few weeks. As the pending samples from December are being tested, samples from January are still awaited from provinces and cases will start coming in February.

According to polio journal released on Thursday, two cases are from Khyber Agency (FATA) whereas one case from Tank (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) confirmed this week that raised the number of polio cases to 192.

So far 72 cases have been confirmed from Balochistan, 8 cases from Punjab, 32 cases from Sindh, 22 cases from KPK, 57 from FATA, one case from Gilgit-Baltistan and no cases has been reported from Islamabad yet.

Son of Banara Khan, a resident of Shahdara, was brought to the Mayo Hospital about three weeks back for treatment of high fever. Seeing symptoms of polio, the doctors sent the sample to the National Institute of Health Islamabad for analysis. The report confirmed the presence of Polio virus...

Polio remains a threat to the children of Balochistan. Balochistan has recorded 69 cases in the year 2011 and two in the start of 2012. The worsening situation of polio is a great cause of concern for foreign donors heavily invested in the eradication of polio and the only viable situation lay with a micro-management plan at union council level. Presently, the routine immunisation rate in Balochistan is lower than 25% with the rate in the country dropping day by day. People in Balochistan have made up theories that the vaccine cause infertility, but this is absolutely not true. Lack of political will in supporting the eradication is the main hurdle. But its the duty of the provincial government to take action against those who fail to deliver but are protected by the higher-ups rather than sacked or suspended. ..

PESHAWAR, Jan 26: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has recorded two confirmed polio cases bringing total number of poliomyelitis-affected children to five countrywide in 2012, officials said.

One-year-old Fareeha Bibi, daughter of Ayub Khan, a resident of Aziz Khan Garhi, in Mera Kachori union council of Peshawar, was tested positive by the National Institute of Health Islamabad on Thursday, officials said.

The child hadn?t received any dose of oral polio vaccine (OPV), they said.

MULTAN: After 27 samples from sewerage water were found to contain traces of the polio virus, Multan has been declared a ?polio high risk?, the district?s EDO health said on Saturday.

Talking to The Express Tribune, the executive district officer for health, Mukhtar Hussain Shah confirmed that samples collected in and around Multan carried traces of the polio virus. Hence, Multan had been declared high risk by the Punjab government...

Due to negligence of anti-polio drive, a 3-year-old girl, Sajida has been diagnosed with polio in Mauza Kholtra, in Jhang district.
Sajida complained of pain in her legs, following which her father, Muhammad Saddique, took her to a doctor who injected her left leg with medicine.
After some time, her leg became paralysed. On being taken to the doctor again, her right leg was injected, thus resulting in eventual paralysis of both legs.

ISLAMABAD, Feb 13: Efforts of the ?under performing? special polio cell of prime minister on Monday received another jolt within a span of one-and-a-half months as a new case of crippling disease surfaced in Khyber agency, Dawn has learnt.

?The child never received polio drops during the routine national campaigns putting a question mark over the emergency anti-polio campaign initiated by the Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani last year besides making a dent in credibility of the recent year`s drive?, said a senior federal official while sharing a report on the new polio case.

Some 35 million children under the age of five will be targeted nationwide during the campaign that has already started on Jan 29...

PAKISTAN has failed to educate its children. It is now failing to protect them from communicable diseases like poliomyelitis, an untreatable crippling disease caused by a virus.

Preventive vaccines have however been developed and large regions of the world have been declared polio-free. It is, therefore, a pity that Pakistan is losing its war against polio. A spate of stories in the print media lately point to this tragedy. This is not at all surprising, given our criminal neglect of the health sector.

What is the polio story? When Pakistan launched itself on the long road to polio eradication in 1994, it showed remarkable success. It set up an effective surveillance cell and national immunisation days were undertaken.

The number of polio cases in the country fell from 1,155 in 1997 to just 28 in 2005. Then came the crunch. The war on terror in Fata made many areas inaccessible to the vaccinating teams and migration of populations from war-torn areas became a regular phenomenon. Polio made a comeback and in 2011 the Geneva-based Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) recorded 198 cases in Pakistan, the highest in any country for the second consecutive year. In 2010, the polio toll in Pakistan was 144. The country has now been dubbed a polio danger zone.

We thus have a giant share of the world total of polio cases of 647. There is unprecedented international interest in Pakistan?s polio policy today. Even one case here means a child anywhere remains vulnerable, so globalised has the world become. This argument has been vindicated by our recent ?success? in exporting the virus to China which recorded 18 cases of polio with the strain of the virus being traced to Pakistan.

Multiple factors are responsible for this failure. Broadly speaking, the high level of poverty and the near-collapse of Pakistan?s health delivery structure have made polio eradication an enormous challenge. So far as the specifics are concerned, the immunisation strategy is said to be flawless but not its implementation...

ISLAMABAD, Feb 21: Four new polio cases have been reported from across the country, affirming that the crippling virus is no longer confined to or originating from the conflict-ridden northern areas of Pakistan.

?The four new cases bring the total detected cases to 13 for this year,? World Health Organisation (WHO)`s polio chief Dr Nima Abid told Dawn. It is pertinent to mention that during the same time last year, the number of confirmed polio cases in the country stood at eight.This time around, one case each has been reported from Bahawalnagar in Punjab, Khyber Agency in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas and Hyderabad and Naushahro Feroze in Sindh.

A source within the Unicef polio unit provided further details: ?The first of these cases was detected on January 14, and it was an eight-month-old boy from Khyber Agency; the second case was of a 12-month-old boy from Hyderabad; the third of a 30-month-old girl on January 29 from Naushahro Feroze; while the most recent case has been of a 32-month-old girl from Bahawalnagar on February 2...?

3 more polio cases detected in Sindh

LARKANA ? With country continues to experience a surge of polio cases, three more children were found infected with polio virus here in district Kashmore near a Guddu Town village and Naushehro Feroze on Thursday.

According to details, one case was detected in Naushehro Feroze district and two in Kashmore. A three-year-old girl Sadaf and a four-year-old boy Bilal, children of Nadir Ali Wasti, were diagnosed positive for polio virus.

In Larkana Division, polio cases were reported among three-year-old Aziza, one-year-old Samia, two-year-old Yaseen and five-year-old Deedar last year.

In Kamber-Shahdadkot, three-year-old Mohammad Ali, a resident of Gareebabad Muhalla Kamber city and another five-year-old girl Kalsoom, a resident of village Katohar, were diagnosed positive for polio virus, said officials of Sindh Health Department.

Though stronger, the recently augmented National Emergency Action Plan has failed to show clear impact on polio transmission in Pakistan and that if significant transmission continued beyond April, containing it during this year?s high season would be impossible, says a public-private partnership led by national governments and spearheaded by international health organisations.

?Four months ago, we called for Pakistan?s emergency plan to be re-thought. The new plan is considerably stronger but there is no demonstrable impact of it on polio transmission. Time is running short. The low season window is closing fast. If significant transmission continues beyond April, it will be nigh on impossible to stop it during this year?s high season. As time goes on, sustaining political commitment and energy will be a challenge,? said Independent Monitoring Board of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in a report prepared after a recent meeting convened at the request of the World Health Assembly to monitor and guide the progress of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative?s 2010-12 Strategic Plan...

A seven-month old child in North Waziristan was diagnosed with polio on Tuesday, increasing the country?s polio toll to 12 cases this year.

According to official sources, the affected child, Bakhthullah, was not inoculated against polio because his father, Janullah, who lives in Mami-Rogha area of Miranshah had refused. The case has been confirmed by the National Institute of Health (NIH).

Health experts said this type of polio virus was previously found in the 14 cases previously registered in Waziristan, proving that the virus exists in the region...

ISLAMABAD: Researchers have made valuable progress in identifying the genetic structure and transmission patterns of polio strains circulating along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, one of the remaining global reservoirs of the wild virus.

Virologists from the National Institute of Health in Islamabad screened more than 30,000 people living along the border between 2005 and 2007. They identified and sequenced 111 polioviruses, in an attempt to trace their origins and transmission routes.

The researchers isolated the virus from patients with Acute Flaccid Paralysis, a condition characterised by a sudden onset of muscle weakness, a common sign of polio.

The study, published in the Virology Journal last month (22 February), showed that, despite intense immunisation campaigns and efforts to reduce the number of cases, uncontrolled transmission of wild type1 polioviruses has continued in the region.

Salmaan Sharif, a co-author of the paper based at the NIH, told SciDev.Net the findings would help researchers and officials identify communities that are reservoirs for wild poliovirus, and design more targeted immunisation campaigns...

ISLAMABAD: Alerting the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to the dangers of the vaccinators? failure to get access to the troubled Bara tehsil of Khyber Agency over the last two-and-a-half years, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has recommended ?immediate and imperative? actions to ensure the province maintains Type-3 polio-free status and interrupt Type-1 poliovirus.

In a ?very urgent? communication a copy of which was provided to ?The News? by sources in the Provincial Health Department, WHO representative in Pakistan Dr Guido S?batinelli apprised Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Secretary Ghulam Dastagir on Thursday of the ?serious crisis in evolution in the province with imminent risk of polio outbreaks but opportunities to reach the un-reached,? saying he is compelled and obliged to draw his urgent attention toward the problem based on analysis of the surveillance and monitoring data in the current and historical context.

He said a preliminary report of the WHO polio eradication team, including a visit of the consultant, had also been considered in the suggestion.

According to Dr Guido, an exodus of population is happening from Bara as reflected in sudden up scaling of the registered displaced families at Jalozai camp in Nowshera district. Almost the entire Bara tehsil has no vaccination campaign since September 2009, and hence it has the most persistent (prolonged) outbreak of polio cases ever seen in Pakistan in such a circumscribed area.

There were 18 polio cases from Bara tehsil in 2010, 16 in 2011 and four in 2012 so far. It is the only place in Asia having Type-3 polio cases in 2011 and 2012. This is an extraordinary situation and requires extraordinary steps...

Islamabad: As technical experts from all over the world gather in Islamabad for the annual meeting of the Technical Advisory Group (TAG) on Polio Eradication, credible voices in the health sector are advocating in favour of a full-fledged polio vaccination operation in Bara and Jallozai IDP camps as the only remaining option to arrest the crippling poliovirus.

They are convinced that unless the campaign covers every single individual of every age group, the situation may only get nastier for polio eradication partners.

This recommendation has come outside of the confines of TAG, and at a juncture when the window of opportunity to nab the poliovirus during the low transmission season, is fast closing.

Commenting on the urgent solutions needed to arrest the fast deteriorating situation of polio eradication in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), Professor Dr. Anita Zaidi, chairperson of the Department of Paediatrics and Microbiology at the Aga Khan University (AKU), said: ?For every single case of polio in Pakistan, there are 200 silent infections that clinically remain undiagnosed.

The situation in Bara, where we have had 38 cases since 2010, poses a real threat to the global polio eradication initiative. Thirty-eight confirmed cases of polio means that there are 7,600 silent infections in that area. This silent spread of the polio virus can only be arrested if all people are immunised, regardless of their age...?
