S. Waziristan measles outbreak kills 5 children

PESHAWAR ? Five children in South Waziristan have died from measles during the past week, an official said.

?Non-availability of measles vaccines has become a big problem and if the desired vaccines were not made available, the situation could slip out of hand,? Dr. Azmat Hayat Khan, agency surgeon, told Central Asia Online August 3.

Measles has affected about 400 children, of whom about 100 were hospitalised, he said. He warned of an outbreak throughout the agency if medics failed to immunise children immediately...

PESHAWAR, Pakistan, Aug 14 2012 (IPS) - Measles outbreaks, which have killed at least 100 children in Pakistan’s militancy-hit border areas since May, have prompted calls by experts for better cooperation in territories adjacent to Afghanistan with international immunisation campaigns.

“The latest victims of this paediatric disease are children in the Mohmand Agency of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) where nine deaths have been confirmed as a result of non-vaccination,” Dr. Anwar Shah, top health officer in the agency, told IPS.

Measles, a highly infectious disease, and produces cough, high fever and distinctive rashes as symptoms.

MINGORA: Three minors died due to a mysterious disease in Kalam valley in Swat district...The sources said that scores of children were suffering from the disease in Kalam, Ushu and Utror ...The sources added that there was a measles breakout in the valley. However, the doctors concerned could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.

Over a hundred children have been infected with measles during the last two days in Kalam Tehsil, it has been learnt.
The disease is spreading fast as there are not enough health facilities or doctors in the area, Ahmadin Siddiqui, a local journalist and social activist, told The Express Tribune. Dozens of children are being brought to local hospitals daily and dispensers are performing the duties of doctors as an emergency measure, said Siddiqui. He said the reason for the outbreak, according to health experts, is that the children had not been administered the required vaccines to protect them against measles.

SUKKUR: Some cases of measles have reportedly claimed lives of eight children in the town of Thari Mirwah in Khairpur in the last one week.

Two of those who died were five and the rest under five years of age. They were identified as Munsif, Ali, Farhan, Safdar Ali, Baig Muhammed, Shakeel, Ashfaque and Dhani Bakhsh.

The people of the area have appealed to the provincial Health Department to take notice of the outbreak of measles which have already claimed eight lives in a week...

SUKKUR: Twenty children died and over more than hundred are undergoing treatment after the outbreak of measles in the rain-affected areas, said reports.

The reports said measles broke out in many of the rain-hit villages of Khanpur town of Shikarpur, including Rahimabad, Sheerabad, Garhi Taigho, Pir Bakhsh, Thumhirio and others.

More than one hundred children have been reported under the viral attack. The residents of two of the affected villages ? Rahim Bakhsh and Pir Bakhsh ? said the health department neither bothered to take precautionary measures nor vaccinated the children...

Baku-APA. A six-year-old girl died of measles in Pakistan's southern province of Sindh on Saturday, bringing the death toll to 28 over the last two weeks, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

Local Urdu TV channel Dunya quoted hospital sources as saying that the disease broke out in the children of one to seven years of age during the last week of October in the Upper Sindh areas which were affected by floods earlier in August and September this year.

District Health Officer (DHO), Dr Abdul Fatah Bughio said that he could not verify the number of deaths, however, over one hundred cases of measles have been reported from Upper Sindh...

More than 30 children have died during the past 20 days of measles in upper Sindh. The villages of Salehpat, including Sobo Mahar, Masoo Dhondho, Tarai and Gagro, are the worst affected.

The Executive District Officer (EDO) of Health, Dr Jay Ram Das, told The Express Tribune that cases were reported in Khairpur a month ago, and it spread to Sukkur later. Teams from the health department have vaccinated more than 6,532 children...

Monday, December 24, 2012 - Kashmore?Health authorities have not yet succeeded to overcome the epidemics of measles in different areas of Sindh province as two more children died of the dreadful disease on Sunday. According to details, two children hailing from Saleh Patt area affected of measles expired over lack of appropriate treatment.

It is worth to mention here that at least 20 children have died while dozens others were affected of measles in Saleh Patt, Shikarpur and Kashmore...
