DERA ISMAIL KHAN, April 14: Two suspected patients of Congo virus have been admitted in the isolation ward of District Headquarters Hospital Dera Ismail Khan, said MS Dr Khalid Aziz on Saturday.

He said the blood samples of the two patients had been sent to the National Institute of Health, Islamabad, for verification...

Congo fever claims life of farm worker

KARACHI, June 14: A 57-year-old farm worker from the Dalbandin area in Balochistan ? admitted to the Liaquat National Hospital in the city with a history of high-grade fever, muscle pain and gum bleed ? died on Wednesday, it emerged on Thursday.

Sources at the LNH said that the Pashto-speaking patient was admitted to the hospital on June 10. He tested positive for Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) virus infection at a private university hospital laboratory. He became tachypnic, his oxygen level dropped after midnight and he was declared clinically dead on Wednesday morning.

Ahmedullah, a trader from Quetta accompanying the patient, told Dawn that the dead was a relative of a customer of his and he was a member of the team that came to Karachi. ?As I was told, the man kept a cattle herd at his home in a village some 600 kilometres from Quetta and received treatment at a private hospital in Quetta before coming to Karachi,? he said.

WHO concerned over rising number of Congo fever cases

ISLAMABAD:
The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed concern over the recent outbreak of measles and Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF), commonly known as Congo fever, in some parts of the country.
According to WHO Weekly Epidemiological Bulletin, 22 suspected cases of CCHF were reported throughout the country, out of which 15 cases were confirmed, leading to five deaths this year. Out of 15 cases reported from Balochistan, 13 cases were in Quetta.

First Congo fever case confirmed

Karachi

The first case of deadly Congo Crimean Hemorrhagic Fever has been confirmed from a private hospital in Karachi, whose lab analysis confirmed that the patient was suffering from the viral disease, officials said on Thursday.

The Sindh Dengue Surveillance Cell officials confirmed that the patient, whose name was not disclosed, was admitted to a private hospital in Karachi with symptoms of Congo Crimean Hemorrhagic Fever.

His test from another private hospital confirmed that he was suffering from the disease.

KARACHI: A patient suffering from the Congo virus died in a Karachi hospice late on Thursday evening.
Doctors at private a private hospital in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, as well as Dr Shakeel Aamir Mullick, the in charge of the Dengue Surveillance Cell at Civil Hospital Karachi, which also collects data of Congo patients reported in the province, confirmed the infection and death.

Deadly disease: Congo virus claims first life in twin cities

RAWALPINDI:
A man who died three days back at Holy Family Hospital (HFH) was confirmed to have been infected with Congo fever virus on Saturday.
Abdul Razzaq, 65, was shifted to HFH from Choha Syedan Shah, Chakwal, on August 2 with high fever and pain in his body.
The doctors shifted him to an isolated ward, fearing he was suffering from Congo fever and his blood samples were sent to the National Institute of Health for confirmation. On August 29, Razzaq passed away and his body was taken to Chakwal for burial.
Two days later, the doctors received his reports, which confirmed that the patient had been infected by the virus. Following the news, the hospital administration has decided to carry out medical tests of doctors and staff members who attended Razzaq.

To a query, Dr. Javed said that the doctors and staff who received and provided initial treatment to the patient got exposed to the virus and have been under observation. He added that none of the exposed staff member, however, developed signs and symptoms of the infection as yet.

LANDIKOTAL: A 20-year old boy died of Congo fever in Sheikhmalkhel area of Landikotal subdivision of Khyber Agency, family and hospital sources said on Thursday.

One Azmat told The News by phone that his brother Yasin had been suffering from fever for the last two weeks and was admitted in the Agency Headquarters Hospital in Landikotal where doctors failed to cure him and he was later referred to a hospital in Peshawar...

Patient with symptoms of Congo fever


RAWALPINDI, Sept 30: Holy Family Hospital (HFH) has received a male patient with symptoms of deadly Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF).

Muhammad Imtiaz, aged 45, belonged to Chakwal, arrived on Thursday at HFH with continuous gum and stool bleeding and shifted to Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where doctors suspected him first as a patient of dengue, malaria and typhoid.

?We received test reports of the patient on Sunday and found that he was not suffering from malaria, typhoid or dengue fever.

So, we decided to send blood samples to National Institute of Health for Congo serology on Monday,? said Dr Javed Hayat, HFH In-charge Infectious diseases, while talking to Dawn.

He said that the condition of the patient was stable as he was not suffering from fever and the bleeding had stopped.

?For the satisfaction of the consultant, the sample will be dispatched to NIH for Congo serology,? he said.

A 45-year-old male patient, undergoing treatment at the Holy Family Hospital (HFH) since September 27 after being suspected as a patient of Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF), has been confirmed positive for the infection by the National Institute of Health, Islamabad.

The hospital administration, however, claimed that the patient is out of danger and in a stable condition. The patient, Imtiaz, a butcher, was taken to the HFH from Choa Saidan Shah in District Chakwal on September 27. The HFH, after necessary investigations, sent his sample for the CCHF serology to the NIH on September 29.

PIMS readies for Congo fever patients

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has made arrangements to respond proactively to the reporting of CCHF (Crimean Congo Hemorrhagic Fever) cases in public sector hospital in the wake of Eid-ul-Azha.
A statement issued by the hospital administration said due to upcoming Eid-ul-Azha, a large number of animals will be sacrificed in public places and at household level, hence the risk of acquiring CCHF has increased.
In view of the above facts, dedicated isolation rooms have been made available in indoor department of PIMS with requisite barrier nursing procedures in place for suspected or diagnosed cases of CCHF. Required medications are available in Pharmacy Department, PIMS for treating positive CCHF cases. Comprehensive Diagnostic, Clinical and Supportive treatment will be provided to all CCHF patients admitted in PIMS.

Reports awaited: Suspected Congo patient dies in Abbottabad

Victim was symptomatic; blood tests will confirm infection.
ABBOTABAD:
A suspected Crimean-Congo fever victim died at Combined Military Hospital Abbottabad a few days back, health department and family sources said on Tuesday.
Mansehra Health Executive District Officer Major (retd) Dr Siddique Rehman confirmed the reported death but could not confirm if the deceased had Congo virus as the blood report of the deceased is yet to be received from National Institute of Health (NIH).
Family sources said that Junaid, 14, from Sawan Bandi Peeran in Mansehra District, was taken to King Abdullah Teaching Hospital Mansehra with high fever.
Health authorities referred him to Ayub Medical Complex (AMC) Abbottabad after an initial examination. Health officials said the AMC authorities carried out his tests and provisionally diagnosed him with Congo virus and put him in the isolation ward.
