Polio virus detected on Jacobabad girl

Our Staff Reporter| Metropolitan > Karachi | From the Newspaper (18 hours ago) Today

KARACHI, Nov 25: Detection of 30th polio victim has spurred the Sindh government to suspend the head of district health administration Jacobabad.

Coincidently, the detection of polio virus in a two-year-old girl was reported on Thursday when Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani was chairing a meeting with the Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah on `polio eradication in Pakistan` in Islamabad. A source in the National Institute of Health confirmed polio incidence.

On the other hand, the Sindh chief minister had in October approved an accountability system for officials failing to achieve the desired results and thus ordered the Health Secretary to take necessary action over the detection of 30th polio case this year.

Polio virus found in infant

RAHIM YAR KHAN, Nov 28: Polio virus has been found in an eight-month old girl in Basti Bhattian village of Sadiqabad tehsil, 60km from here.

Rahim Yar Khan district had been polio free for the last seven years.

According to health officials, infant Sonia missed the vaccination. Initially, her family took her to Swaitra Chowk Basic Health Unit from where she was referred to polio surveillance team in-charge Dr Zaheer Sattar. She was admitted to Sadiqabad Tehsil Headquarters Hospital.

After Islamabad?s National Institute of Health diagnosed that Sonia had been suffering from acute flaccid paralysis, she was shifted to Shaikh Zayed Hospital in RY Khan.

District Health Officer Dr Ghulam Rabbani said Sonia missed the polio vaccination and added that show-cause notices had been issued to four health employees ? union council vaccinator Murad, tehsil inspector (vaccination) Jahangir Khan, tehsil assistant superintendent (vaccination) Muhammad Farooq and district superintendent (vaccination) Faqeer Muhammad ? for their negligence. He said Sonia was being treated at Shaikh Zayed Hospital and her condition was improving.

When this correspondent visited the hospital, doctors on duty were unaware of admission of any such child to the hospital. Medical Superintendent Dr Mushtaq Ahmed said no polio victim had been admitted to the hospital.

6 new polio cases unravel govt?s hollow claims

ISLAMABAD - Clearly reflecting the ineffective government measures to control polio, six new cases of this fatal disease have been reported across the country during the current week, causing fears and concerns among the parents about the health of their children.

The emergence of six new cases of polio (type-I wild virus) this week has showed that the federal government?s campaign has failed to achieve the desired results despite the fact that 2011 was declared as the polio-eradication year. They year is coming to an end but there is still no end in sight of the crippling disease.

The number of polio cases nationwide became 181 after the 6 new cases. Out of these two cases were reported from Tank and Peshawar (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) and two from Muzaffargarh & Dera Ghazi Khan (Punjab) whereas one case each was reported from Thatta (Sindh) and Khyber Agency (FATA). The emergence of new cases of polio this week has exposed the Prime Minister?s Polio Monitoring and Coordination Cell, as it is being reported that the most of the infected children were vaccinated seven times against the disease during various campaigns...

ISLAMABAD: Is polio rearing its head in Islamabad territory again after having been ?eradicated? three years ago?

Prime Minister?s Special Assistant and Focal Person on Polio Eradication Shahnaz Wazir Ali has warned that the city is at risk because water samples collected from neighbouring Rawalpindi have shown presence of polio virus.

Though Islamabad has not had a case for the last three years, the city can have a case anytime with large influx of mobile population emigrating from areas that are polio affected,? she told a meeting with city and WHO officials called on Friday to consider the situation.

Dawn has learnt that the Polio Virology Laboratory at the National Institute of Health is already investigating several cases of acute paralysis reported from Islamabad and other places in the country.
