Dengue virus no more threat to masses: Health Dept (Punjab)
By: Iftikhar Alam | Published: April 17, 2010

LAHORE - There is no more threat of dengue virus in Punjab as all the preventive measures have been adopted by the Health Department including awareness campaign, fumigation etc against the mosquito-borne disease.

These views were expressed by the officials of health department Punjab here on Friday. They said, however, doctors did not subscribe to this claim reasoning that the government lacked proper system of spray and fumigation to reach out to every nook and corner where the breed of mosquito took place...

34 new cases reported
Tuesday, 28 Sep, 2010

KARACHI, Sept 27: Suspected dengue fever cases continued to be reported in a large number at various government and private hospitals and at least 34 of the patients have been admitted to 10 different health facilities on Sunday and Monday.
Dengue surveillance cell Sindh coordinator Dr Shakil Mullick told APP on Monday that eight new dengue patients each were admitted to the Remedial Hospital and Ziauddin Hospital in North Nazimabad. The Karachi Adventist Hospital admitted six, Abbasi Shaheed Hospital two, Sindh Government Qatar Hospital three and Aga Khan Hospital, Civil Hospital and Anklesaria Hospital admitted two new dengue cases each, he added. He said the Liaquat National Hospital and OT Hospital admitted one new case each.

Dr Mullick said it was also during the past few days that two patients suffering from dengue had died. He identified them as Rehan, 20, who died on Sept 21 in Patel Hospital, and Faheem Khan, 19, who died in Mamji Hospital on Sept 23.

In reply to a question, he said the number of cases reported to his cell had markedly increased as private hospitals had started sharing the required data after heeding the provincial health department?s strict directive in this regard.?APP

Elderly woman, young man die of dengue fever By Mukhtar Alam
Wednesday, 29 Sep, 2010

KARACHI, Sept 28: The Sindh health department on Tuesday confirmed that two more patients, including a young man, died of dengue fever at a private hospital located on Stadium Road during the last 24 hours.

With two more deaths, a total of four patients had lost their lives during a short span of one week due to dengue fever.

The focal person of the dengue surveillance cell of the Sindh health department, Dr Shakeel A. Mullick, told Dawn that 86-year-old Ms Khatija and 24-year-old Unaib died of dengue.

?An official of the private hospital informed me over phone that the two patients, who had tested positive for dengue fever, died on Monday evening at the hospital,? said Dr Mullick.

When contacted, an administrator of the private hospital refused to share any relevant information with Dawn.

According to Dr Mullick, the private hospital had also verbally told him that five new patients had been tested positive for the mosquito-borne diseases on Tuesday.

The dengue surveillance cell had confirmed the death of two dengue positive patients in the city on Friday last. Twenty-year-old Rehan died at the Patel Hospital on Sept 21, while 19-year-old Faheem Khan died on Sept 23 at the Mamji Hospital.

A source in the health department said that the government and private hospitals across the province had already been instructed not to hide the dengue cases from authorities and report them as soon as they came across such suspected or confirmed cases. ?Those hospitals which fail to report the cases on time would be liable to official actions,? the source added.

In the meantime, the dengue surveillance cell declared that 11 new patients suspected of suffering from dengue fever were admitted to different hospitals in the city during the last 24 hours.

During the year so far, 457 patients suspected of having dengue fever were notified and 294 of them (64 per cent) had been tested positive.

In all, 37 new and old dengue confirmed or suspected patients were still admitted at 11 government and private hospitals in the city, including the Remedial Hospital (8 patients), the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (four patients), the Karachi Adventists Hospital (five patients), the Dr Ziauddin Hospital (six), the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (three), the Aga Khan University Hospital (three patients).

Re: Pakistan: 2010 Dengue cases

The epidemic that wasn't
Sehrish Wasif

ISLAMABAD: Health institutes are giving conflicting reports about the number of patients diagnosed with dengue fever in the country.

While National Institute of Health (NIH), the primary institute for testing blood samples, says no patient has yet tested positive for the disease, while ministry of health officials and doctors at government-run hospitals tell a different story.

They say scores of patients have been diagnosed with dengue and that too by NIH.

These conflicting reports, at the very least, point to a lack of coordination between government health institutions.

?We receive blood samples from all over the country, but so far, no one has been diagnosed with the disease,? claimed Dr Jaleel Kamran of Epidemic Investigation Cell at NIH on Saturday.

However Dr Rashid Jooma, Director General Ministry of Health, denied NIH?s claims.

He said 2,000 patients suspected of suffering dengue fever had been reported from across the country, out of which 1,000 had tested positive.

?Almost all of the cases reported positive for dengue were tested by NIH,? he added.

?All test samples of suspected dengue fever patients coming to hospital were sent to NIH for tests,? Dr Mehmood Jamal concurred, who is the Executive Director of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims). He said that over the past 24 hours, the hospital had received 20 such patients, including a senior politician. He said that of these 20, six were declared positive by NIH.

Dr Javed Hayat, In-charge of the Infection Control Committee at Holy Family Hospital, said they had received 204 patients with symptoms indicative of dengue. Their blood samples were sent to NIH and results for 41 came back positive for the virus.

Dr Asif Mir, Medical Superintendent at Benazir Bhutto Hospital Rawalpindi, said that as many as 40 patients suspected of being infected with the virus had been brought to the hospital. He said the hospital took blood samples of the patients and sent them to NIH for tests. ?NIH declared two patients positive for the virus.?

Dr Sher Ali, Medical Superintendent at Divisional Headquarter (DHQ) Rawalpindi, and Dr Sharif Astori, spokesperson for the Polyclinic Hospital, also had similar claims. Dr Ali claimed that during the past week, 10 patients suspected of dengue came to the hospital. Four of them were tested positive for the virus by NIH.

Dr Astori of Polyclinic Hospital said they had received 10 suspected dengue patients in the past seven days, of which NIH diagnosed six patients with the disease. Talking to the Express Tribune, Head of Pathology Department Pims, Professor Dr Anwarul Haq, said the hospital had been requested to provide testing kits. This will help diagnose dengue patients in a shorter duration so that they can be given timely treatment.

The doctor said the hospital is also facing shortage of platelets due to the large number of patients suspected of the disease coming in.

?We normally request the patient?s attendant to donate blood but even then, at times, the blood becomes difficult to arrange,? she said.

Six more die of dengue fever

ARACHI: Six people died of the deadly dengue virus in the city during last 24 hours, raising the death toll to 12. Provincial Dengue Surveillance Cell head Dr Shakeel Malik said five people died of dengue in September while seven fell victim to the disease in October. Six deaths were reported from the Aga Khan Hospital while six in other hospitals of the province including seven men and five women, he added. Dozens of people with symptoms of dengue and high fever are being reported daily from government and private hospitals, however, the provincial and federal governments seem the least concerned to take any precautionary measures.
