PADOA now requires health certs for all animals at fairs

CDC Health Advisory
August 12, 2012
By: Yvonne P Mazzulo

Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PADOA) has declared that any animals must obtain a health certificate before entering a Pennsylvania fair as a new strain of the swine flu, the H3N2, has been found making its way through various fairs across the country.

More than 150 documented cases of the H3N2 strain have already been reported, and the strain has already hit Ohio and Indiana, though no cases of the strain has so far been reported in Pennsylvania.

A spokesperson for Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture said pigs are being checked on a daily basis for fevers, and if any are found sick, they are excluded from the fair. The primary transition of H3N2 is from pigs to humans, although there have only been isolated cases of the disease spreading from human to human.

Re: PADOA now requires health certs for all animals at fairs

I was to my county fair today and was scarffing down my chicken corn soup a few feet away from some pretty hefty hogs. The animals I saw looked heathy and mostly board. So did their proud 4H owners who were happy to talk to anyone interested about their pet projects. No sniffles or flu here so far. The only concern I noted at the fair was a lost toddler that was quickly reunited with his mom. She could not get her son into her arms quick enough and the expresion on her face as she closed her eyes and hugged him brought smiles and knowing nods from other parents. There was a sink for those who wanted to wash up after a trip through the animal barn and I actually did see someone using it.
