UNIVERSITY PARK ? At least two Penn State students have swine flu, and the university is getting ready for more cases and taking steps to prevent the spread of the virus.

Margaret Spear, director of University Health Services, told the Faculty Senate on Tuesday that while the university was extremely fortunate in the spring when the disease appeared, things have since changed. Over the summer, the university had 25 cases of H1N1 out of 37 in Centre County.

?This campus is the focus of H1N1 or has been over the summer,? Spear said. ?This is an illness that by and large affects young people.?

She said that 70 percent of those infected with it in Pennsylvania and the United States are younger than 24.

The university is taking steps, including encouraging frequent hand washing and asking students who are ill to go home to recover if possible, or to isolate themselves. They aren?t expected to get doctor?s notes.

In an August memo to faculty, Provost Rodney Erickson said that because of ?the contagious nature of the illness, its prevalence to date among college-age students, and the self-isolation protocols, it is prudent to prepare for the possibility of significant absences from class during the fall semester.?
