Just hours before the start of its high school football game against conference rival Knoch earlier this month, Shady Side Academy announced that it would have to forfeit due to an illness outbreak.

The culprit: hand, foot and mouth disease, which has struck schools with unusual vengeance.

“I’ve been really surprised this fall,” said Clare Sarknas, a pediatrician with UPMC Children’s Community Pediatrics-Bass Wolfson in Cranberry. “We’ve been seeing a lot of school-aged kids coming in with a sore throat, wanting to be checked for strep. We’ve looked in their mouths and we see these blisters.”

The Elizabeth Forward School District has also seen an increase in hand, foot and mouth disease cases this fall.​..

Four cases of hand, foot and mouth disease have been confirmed at Allentown Central Catholic High School
While usually not dangerous, the disease is highly contagious
Symptoms include fever, mouth sores and body rash

ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Officials at Central Catholic High School notified parents and families Wednesday that four cases of hand, foot and mouth disease have been identified throughout the school since it began in August.

In an email, Principal Randy Rice said though the disease is not one that must be reported to the health bureau, the alarming factor is that the disease spreads so quickly.​..
