On the eve of Spring break, Temple University reported Thursday night that at least four students have verified cases of the mumps.

The four cases of the infectious disease were verified by the Philadelphia Department of Public Health, but the university believes there could be more cases, said Temple spokesman Ray Betzner.

The university received the verification late in the day and sent notifications around 9:30 p.m. to 40,000 students and several thousands faculty and staff, Betzner said...

As health officials feared, the mumps outbreak that began at Temple University last week is spreading.

As of Tuesday, the Philadelphia Health Department confirmed 16 students had the contagious disease.

One of them, a part-time student, went home to Montgomery County and is believed to have infected another resident, the county?s Health Department said. Health officials have alerted everyone else who came in contact with the student to look for symptoms, and they are monitoring the situation...

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) ? A mumps outbreak at Temple University is getting worse.

The number of mumps-related cases has jumped from 11 to 17 over the past few days, according to Mark Denys, director of Student and Employee Health Services.

"There are seven that have been confirmed in our office, one that's been confirmed at an outside hospital," he said. "There are seven probable cases and two that are still under investigation. They're not ready to call them probable cases yet."

There are nearly 40 Temple-related mumps cases as of Thursday.

Eleven cases have been confirmed, and there are 27 probable cases, Jim Garrow, the director of communications for the Philadelphia Department of Public Health, wrote in an email to The Temple News. Three of the 38 cases are from surrounding counties.

Mark Denys, the director of Employee and Student Health Services, told The Temple News on Wednesday that this includes two students from Montgomery County and one student from Delaware County.

A mumps outbreak at Temple University has now reached 74 cases ? adding seven cases in the past day.
There are now 15 confirmed cases and 59 probable cases.
Health officials recommend anyone showing symptoms of the infection seek medical care and avoid contact with others for at least five days.

Philadelphia health officials believe seven additional people have contracted the mumps at Temple University, sending the new tally from the outbreak to a new high.

The total number of cases now stands at 74, James Garrow, spokesman for the Philadelphia Department of Health, said Wednesday, with 71 in Philadelphia and three from surrounding counties. A day before there were 67 cases.

Health officials confirmed 15 cases through laboratory testing while 59 others were listed as probable. The university has more than 40,000 students enrolled and 4,500 staff members, according to school data...

...A Drexel University graduate student is believed to have the disease, Dr. Sabir Sahu, the school's Dean of Students, said in an email message to students on Friday. The student lives off-campus.

In Montgomery County, there were 20 suspected cases of the infection as of Friday afternoon. Dr. Richard Lorraine, the county's medical director, said none of the cases have been confirmed positive through laboratory testing at this point.

Among the probable cases are two students: a high schooler from Abington Senior High and an elementary student from North Wales. Both districts sent home letters to parents warning them to be on the lookout for symptoms...
