Oxford County : Mumps Pushes Start of School Back In Norwich

An outbreak of the Mumps in Oxford County is causing a school to push back the start of their school year. According to the Oxford County Board of Health 44 cases have turned up in Norwich. It started in a conservative religious group that is against immunization - and as a result the start of classes at the Rehoboth Christian School has been postponed by one week. No such luck for local students - the Haldimand Norfolk Health Unit says they haven't had a single case reported - so students head back to class on Tuesday. In British Columbia's Fraser Valley health officials are dealing with 200 cases in a region that normally says about 10 cases a year.

Oxford Co., Ontario: Mumps outbreak

The only school in Oxford County who has received exclusion orders is Rehoboth Christian School. There are several schools in Norwich and many in Oxford County. The majority students do not live in Norwich, but in surrounding communities. How is it possible that the health department is able to issue exclusion orders to only one school? This is discrimination against a religious community who choose to not immunize, a legal right according to the Canadian Constitution! How can Ontario refuse the right to an education for primary school children when they are not immunized, particularly when this is a legal right according to the Canadian Charter of Rights? This community should be outraged!!!
