OWATONNA ? An Owatonna High School senior has died after exhibiting what her family has characterized as ?flu-like symptoms.?

Shannon Zwanziger, 17, died Tuesday after being flown to Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

Her father, Terry Zwanziger, said that Shannon had come home from school sick last Wednesday, Dec. 3, and stayed home from school on both Thursday and Friday.

When her condition did not improve over the weekend, her parents took her to the Same Day Clinic at Mayo Clinic Health System in Owatonna on Sunday, her father said.

?They told her it was the typical flu and it would just have to run its course,? he said.

Autopsy: Owatonna High School student had the flu

OWATONNA ? Shannon Zwanziger, the Owatonna High School senior who died on Tuesday, tested positive for the flu, according to preliminary autopsy results released Friday by the Owatonna Police Department.

An autopsy was performed on Zwanziger by the Southern Minnesota Regional Medical Examiner?s Office in Rochester after she died Tuesday morning at Mayo Clinic, where she had been taken after her heart had stopped beating.

The initial autopsy reports indicate that Zwanziger died of ?natural causes,? the Owatonna Police said in a statement issued on Friday. The statement also said that a ?preliminary influenza swab indicated a presumptive positive.?

The report said that further analysis will be done to determine the specific strain of influenza that Zwanziger had.

?Secondary infections related to pneumonia are also believed to be contributing factors,? the statement from police said.

?It was preventable,? Terry Zwanziger said. ?I don?t want it to happen to anyone else. Our message to parents is, ?Don?t be afraid to advocate for your children.? Their lives are most prized possession you have.?

He said he wants parents to trust their instincts and pay close attention after leaving the doctor?s office.

?We left with cough syrup and nausea medication,? he said. ?Forty-eight hours later, Shannon died.?

Zwanziger said he believes a simple blood test would have revealed a lethal level of potassium and dehydration in her system that the medical examiner told him contributed to her untimely death.
