Typhoid hits Southern Leyte village

MAASIN CITY, Philippines - A rash of typhoid cases was reported in a village in Macrohon town, Southern Leyte, as six persons, including a four-year-old child, tested positive while 29 others have shown symptoms starting Monday.

Dr. Joselito Trumata, Southern Leyte provincial health officer, said on Tuesday afternoon that the six patients, all from Barangay (Village) Rizal, were brought to the Salvacion Oppus Y?iguez Memorial provincial hospital (SOYMPH) here after experiencing fever and diarrhea for several days.

Trumata said the source of the village's drinking water was found contaminated with human waste.

He said they already treated the water contained in the reservoir with chlorine. Samples from other water sources such as deep wells were also taken for testing.

Trumata said they advised residents in the area to always boil their drinking water for at least 30 minutes until all water sources in the area are fully treated.

Typhoid fever is a disease caused by the Salmonella typhi bacteria. It spreads through contaminated food and water or through close contact with someone who is infected.

Aside from high fever and diarrhea, the other symptoms are fever and abdominal pains

Typhoid fever downs 36 in Leyte village

PALO, Leyte - Local health officials on Friday alerted residents about a typhoid fever outbreak in Rizal village, Macrohon, Southern Leyte, which has affected 36 residents.

Sentinel Nurse Roderick Boyd Cerro said 11 people with typhoid fever have been admitted in hospital since August 16. One person, a 36-year-old male resident, has died from the illness.

"Victims are suffering from fever,headache,diarrhea and constipation," he said.

Typhoid fever is caused by the bacterium Salmonella enterica serovar typhi and is transmitted by the ingestion of food or water contaminated with feces from an infected person.

The Department of Health Regional Epidemiology Unit said it is testing two water sources in the area for possible contamination. "We are still waiting the results for the confirmation of the laboratory test of the water samples and this time health authorities had given advising the residents to boil water to avoid such disease," Cerro said.
