Bulgarian Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry Takes Measures over Bird Flu Case in Southern Bulgaria

Sofia. A bird flu case has been registered in a village in southern Bulgaria. Samples were taken after a great number of poultry was found death in the village of Slanchogled (municipality of Dzhebel, district of Kardzhali). The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry received a message on Thursday at 3 p.m., which confirmed that disease is avian flu, Bulgarian Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Nihat Kabil said at a press conference, a journalist of FOCUS News Agency reported.
Nihat Kabil has immediately informed Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev, President Georgi Parvanov, Minister of Disaster Management Policy Emel Etem and Minister of Health Radoslav Gaydarski.
Nihat Kabil has ordered all the birds in region of the municipality to be culled. Compensations will be paid to the owners. Mr. Kabil stressed that the Ministry is taking measures against the disease.
The results of the virus?s strain will be ready in four days. Then the samples will be sent to a reference laboratory in Great Britain.

Bulgarian authorities reported Thursday the first case of bird flu with domestic fowl on the territory of the country - in the village of Slanchogled (sunflower), near Kurdzhali.
Veterinaries have undertaken checks of local fowl after birds were found to die in bulks.
The positive results of initial tests have detected the availability of the virus of avian flu, the Agriculture Ministry announced at a special press conference.
All fowl and turkeys from three farms were killed, massive disinfection is under way and tightened control on passing trucks and vehicles is installed, the officials said.
Two people who were in contact with the infected birds are under constant medical surveillance, Agriculture Minister Nihat Kabil said.
The information on the bird flu situation was conferred to Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev, President Georgi Parvanov, Disasters Management Minister Emel Etem, and Health Minister Radoslav Gaydarski, their agriculture colleague said.
