OTTAWA (CBC) - A 67-year-old man in the Outaouais region of west Quebec has died of an H1N1 infection, health officials reported Thursday.
Officials said the man had underlying health conditions and died on Tuesday. Laboratory tests confirmed that he was infected with the H1N1 influenza A virus, which is responsible for the current swine flu pandemic.
The death is the second in the Outaouais region to be reported this week.
A 26-year-old woman with a chronic medical condition died Saturday night at a health centre after contracting the virus.
On Monday, Outaouais health officials said the region has had 221 confirmed cases of H1N1 influenza since the second wave of the swine flu pandemic began. Of those, 24 people have been hospitalized.
