We caution everyone to carefully consider donations to the many relief organizations that are requesting money for typhoon Haiyan efforts. Before you donate, please look at the record of the organization and review how much of their budget is spent on actual assistance versus administrative costs.

In some of the Philippines' most devastated regions, survivors of Typhoon Haiyan are returning to flattened communities with no food, water or sanitation, as officials struggle to provide relief. Angus Walker of Independent Television News reports from the city of Tacloban. Lynnette Lim of Save The Children joins Gwen Ifill.

SAVE THE CHILDREN

The Impact on Children

Children are always among the most vulnerable in an emergency. Based on our first assessments and the magnitude of the disaster, we know that children are in urgent need of lifesaving support and safe places to recover from the stresses they feel from the loss of their homes and disruption of normal routines. Shortages of food, clean water and shelter in the disaster zone are taking a tremendous toll on children's health and well-being. Children who become malnourished will have a hard time warding off diseases, and incidences of children suffering from diarrhea resulting from dirty water and unsanitary conditions have been reported. And with thousands of schools damaged or destroyed or being used as shelters, children's education is being disrupted.

Save the Children's Response to Typhoon Haiyan

Save the Children has launched humanitarian relief for Filipino children and families. Our relief experts are on the scene, moving as quickly as conditions allow to assess children's needs and initiate the help they and their families require right now and for their recovery. We are also deploying additional relief experts to the Philippines to help support our planned large-scale relief and recovery operation.

Typhoon Haiyan diary: Mud and ruin in Tacloban

By Nonoy Fajardo, UNICEF Disaster Risk Reduction and Emergency Specialist
...
TACLOBAN, Philippines, 13 November 2013 ? I have been working on emergencies for more than 15 years now, and I seriously thought I had seen it all.

But flying into Tacloban on Monday as part of a United Nations assessment team, I was in for a shock.
...
The dead were just lying there, among the dazed groups of survivors who were milling about. No structure was left untouched. Even the biggest and strongest concrete buildings were damaged.
...
I went to the city coliseum to talk to survivors. Even before they opened their mouths, I could see in their eyes the shock, fear and frustration at what they had just been through.

One man saw me with my satellite phone and told me, ?Use that to call help and get food for us.?
...
After traveling through the city, I reported back to colleagues in Manila with a few bars of phone signal I could get in this one spot I found.

There?s no need to assess anymore, I told them.

These people here have lost everything. They need everything.
