Small NY school district closes because of flu

October 21, 2009 4:38 PM
Associated Press

ALBANY -- A public school district will close Thursday because a third of the staff and students have symptoms of flu.

State education officials say the closing of the small Worcester Central School District in Otsego County appears to be the first in New York because of flu.

Two students have confirmed cases of the swine flu and others, most of whom were not tested for the virus, reported flu-like symptoms.

The school's Web site says parent conferences will continue as scheduled Friday.

The rural district of 419 students in kindergarten through 12th grade is 50 miles west of Albany.
