Malaria kills 4, takes shape of an epidemic

PARALAKHEMUNDI, July 2: The deadly malaria has claimed at least four lives within the last 24 hours and seems to be spreading alarmingly. While one person had died a fortnight ago in the district scores of others are also afflicted with cerebral malaria in Kududa village of Gosani in Gajapati district, sources said.
The villagers alleged that though malaria has taken the form of an epidemic in the region since one month, the health department had not taken any substantial steps to contain the disease. Even the health workers and auxiliary nurse midwives cared little to inform the higher authorities about the grave situation, they rued.
On receiving information, the administration has reportedly swung into action and the BDO Mr Sudhakar Sabara has started arranging medicines for the patients. Those in serious conditions are being shifted to Paralakhemundi for treatment. Mr Sabara said that blood samples of all the villagers are being collected and a team of doctors will remain in the village for the next one week to monitor the situation.
?The district administration will take care of the medical expenditure of the patients who have been shifted to Paralakhemundi,? Mr Sabara assured.
Sources said that of the five dead, two had died at Paralakhemundi hospital and three died in the village because they could not afford the treatment. With most of the men folk having migrated out of the village in search of work, the women and elderly of the village are facing a touch time in caring for the sick.
?I had admitted my son to the hospital but I could not afford the expensive medicines prescribed by the doctors,? said parent of G Kumarswamy, one of the dead patients.
Meanwhile MLA Mr Trinath Sahu and local leader Mr K Narayan Rao have visited the village and assured all help possible to the victims.
