Re: Mass crow death in Paradip and Jajpur triggers panic - H5N1 confirmed in two poultry samples in Keranga, 31k birds culled; Positive poultry sample in Betanati, 11k birds culled; positive samples in crows

From these reports 3 different avian species have been named, apart from poultry:
Crows (assume this is the same as ravens) - Carrion feeders, local migration
Pidgeons
Owls - hunting birds

From my researches into owls in this region, they can hunt birds as well as vermin and other small mammals etc so it is possible that crows are on thier 'diet' sheet, especially if they are 'easy prey' because they are sick; they wont generally take a dead animal though i.e they do not feed on carrion, so a direct poultry connection is unlikely.

I would hope that the local officials trap some mice/ rats and test these for H5N1 just to rule them out of the transmission chain.

Odisha overcomes bird flu scare

SATYASUNDAR BARIK

Following marginal rise in temperature, no case reported in past fortnight

Odisha has managed to overcome the bird flu scare last month by selectively carrying out culling at two places in the coastal and northern part of the State.

Following a marginal rise in temperature, not a single positive avian influenza case had been reported during the past fortnight.

...
It is estimated that more than 2,000 crows perished at different places spread across 13 districts of the State.

?Right now we have stopped culling. Since the temperature during the past couple of weeks has gone up by a few degree Celsius, the conditions for avian influenza spreading has become unfavourable. However, we have been continuously sending samples of dead crows and poultry birds to HSADL and Eastern Region Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, Kolkata,? said Benudhar Das, Director of State Veterinary Services.

City dwellers stall culling operations
Sandeep Mishra, TNN | Feb 7, 2012, 03.15AM IST
BHUBANESWAR: Culling operations were affected in slums here after residents refused to part with their poultry birds on Monday, while the Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) silently suffered the loss of its entire stock of fowls used for research.

"We are not able to cull birds in certain slums and residential localities as the people did not cooperate with us," said an officer engaged in culling in parts of the state capital to prevent spread of bird flu.

During day two of culling operations at the Central Poultry Development Organisation (where bird flu virus was detected on Friday) near the Kalinga Stadium and surrounding areas within three km of it, people, especially in slums, preferred to hide domesticated fowls. Consequently, as against an estimated over 8000 domesticated poultry birds in the "alert zone", government staff could eliminate only 299, official sources said.

37,000 pure-bred poultry birds culled in Odisha
Satyasundar Barik

The Hindu

Odisha has suffered a huge setback in poultry research and commercialisation as the parent stock of birds, being maintained in two prominent research centres, has been eliminated in the culling operation carried out following detection of bird flu here.

By evening on Monday more than 37,000 pure bred birds, had been culled in farms of the Central Poultry Development Organisation (CPDO) and veterinary college of the Orissa University of Agriculture Technology (OUAT) here.

The CPDO had 29,857 poultry birds in layer chicken, quail, guinea fowl and turkey while OUAT firms possessed about 8000 birds.

?The loss is immeasurable. We had developed the stock after 15 to 16 years of research under a project of the Indian Council of Agriculture Research. We had achieved almost all parameters outlined in the research objective,? P.K. Mishra, head of the Department of Poultry Sciences, OUAT, told The Hindu here on Monday.

February 7, 2012 By Akshaya Kumar Sahoo Correspondent Bhubaneswar

Members of Rapid Response Teams (RRTs), engaged in the culling of poultry birds, on Monday faced an embarrassing situation in Bhubaneswar. As they approached households in slums to collect birds to ward off the spread of the avian influenza, they found all houses locked. Frustrated, the RRTs returned emptied handed.
“When we went to different slums to collect birds from their owners, we found most of the houses locked. At some places, we found the birds roaming around but we could not catch them in absence of their owners,” RRT official Dr Ranjan Kumar Sahoo said.

House-to-house survey from Tuesday
Express News Service , The New Indian Express

BHUBANESWAR: The Central Poultry Development Organisation (CPDO) and the OUAT farm were on Monday cleansed of their entire poultry stock as culling operations have now veered in community level bird population.

Around 29,000 birds in the CPDO were killed along with 9,000-odd in the OUAT farm under the exercise that went on well into the night. Culling was initiated at the ward-level under the impact zone carved out of the 3-km radius of the CPDO. The impact zone has 29 of the 60 wards of the Capital.

Disbursement of compensation among the affected people, the farmers and the sellers would start from Tuesday.

The personnel undertaking the culling operations faced opposition at some places but the issue was resolved with people being made aware of the risks and threats.

Bird flu: Poultry farms face Rs 200 crore loss
Ashok Pradhan, TNN | Feb 7, 2012, 11.18PM IST

BHUBANESWAR: A month after bird flu was first detected in the state on January 8, it is feared thousands of poultry farms in the state would down shutters for ever.

"In areas where the fowls were culled, farmers are getting compensation for their damage. But those outside the 3-km radius of the three epicentres are facing a tougher time. Prices have nosedived and there is restriction on the transport of poultry. There are at least 3,000 farms that can't survive these market conditions," said Odisha Poultry Farmers Association president P K Rout on Tuesday.

"Start-up farms who had taken loans are doomed," he said.

While the price of chicken has come down to one-fourth, eggs have become cheaper by Re 1. Normally, per day business of poultry meat is worth around Rs 7 crore, with Odisha producing 36 lakh eggs every day. The sale now is estimated to be around less than Rs 3 crore a day, Rout said.
