Bird flu scare reaches capital

BIBHUTI BARIK

Bhubaneswar, Jan. 16: The death of eight fowls and five other birds near Jadupur on the outskirts of the capital has triggered fears of the bird flu spreading to Bhubaneswar. Bird samples from Jadupur have been sent to the High Security Animal Disease Laboratory (HSADL) in Bhopal for analysis.

Experts from the Fisheries and Animal Resources Development (FARD) department have attributed the Jadupur bird deaths, in ward No. 59 of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), to ranikhet disease. However, local residents want a thorough examination to find out the cause of the deaths because they suspect bird flu.

The bird flu control room sources said only seven poultry birds died of ranikhet disease in Jadupur and three were treated for possible ranikhet disease infection. However, local councillor Chhabi Das said there were eight deaths of poultry birds yesterday, apart from three pigeons and two crows.

The number of official crow deaths in the city has climbed to 80 though unofficial sources claim it is more than that. The Bhopal laboratory is yet to send any report on the crow deaths. The FARD department has recorded 1,036 crow deaths in the state.

...

After culling more than 33,000 poultry birds in and around Kerang gram panchayat by yesterday evening, the 10 rapid response teams today started a special cleaning drive so that all the dead birds could be disposed of scientifically.
...

Today, two teams of senior FARD officials went to Mayurbhanj district’s Betnoti block. A scientific team also went to coordinate the surveillance mechanism in and around Chilika lake because migratory birds coming there could also act as carriers of avian influenza virus H5N1. Eleven such teams are also working near major water bodies across the state.

Though no central directive on culling has been issued so far for Betnoti block, where Bahanada has become the second epicentre of the bird flu, the celebration of Makar Sankranti may have resulted in a natural culling process. The tribal people there usually consume their entire domestic poultry during this festival.

...

Six crows were found dead in different parts of Sambalpur city today. While three were found in the Sen Park area, the other three were found near San Sadak. The first crow deaths were reported in the city on January 12.

Bird Flu: Surveillance intensified at Betanati
Express News Service , The New Indian Express

BHUBANESWAR: The Government on Tuesday sent 10 more samples from Betanati in Mayurbhanj to the High Security Animal Diseases Laboratory (HSADL), Bhopal, for testing even as the region has been declared a restricted zone awaiting Central advisory for culling. A high alert has been issued by the Fisheries and Animal Resources Department (FARD) following confirmation of H5N1 virus in a poultry bird on Monday. With 41 more bird deaths, including that of chicken, ducks along with crows, reported on Tuesday, the Department rushed the samples to the HSADL to be absolutely sure that the toll is due to avian influenza.
Betanati poses a unique problem as the poultry population in the region is primarily domesticated indigenous species and not broiler farm birds. The bird population too is scattered. There are no farms to rear poultry birds in the region.
?The indigenous species of poultry birds are known to have a higher degree of resistance to the flu virus and not affected easily. Besides, they being traditionally reared in the backyards by the predominantly tribal population as a means of sustenance, going ahead with immediate culling would impact the people economically. Therefore, we have sent more samples to be absolutely sure that they have died of bird flu,? Director, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH & VS), Benudhar Das said.

BHUBANESWAR: The steady rise in day temperature after Makar Sankranti (January 15) may soon prove to be the end of the present bird flu menace in the state.

"With winter being on its last leg and days becoming warmer, the avian influenza fear is all set to end in the next few days. High temperature will automatically deactivate the virus," said Dr Balaram Sahu, research officer at Orissa Biological Products Institute.

"The virus gets destroyed in three to four days under 20 to 25 degree Celsius temperature. It can die within four hours once the temperature reaches 32 degree Celsius and instantly under 70 degree Celsius. That is why chicken dish or boiled eggs will not harm because Indian dishes are prepared in high temperature," he added.

Bhubaneswar, Jan. 22: Fishmongers are raking in the moolah as prices have soared in the wake of bird flu cases. With the demand for fish soaring, the prices have gone up by at least Rs 20 per kilogram.

While prices of small fishes have gone up to Rs 120 per kg from Rs100, the price of big fishes has risen to Rs 140 per kg against Rs 120. At present, the capital city is procuring 80 tonnes of fish everyday, which was 60 tonnes even a week ago. Poultry culling: Odisha Farmers incur loss of Rs 1,000 cr
Thursday, January 26, 2012

Bhubaneswar: After the bird flu scare hit Odisha following detection of H5N1 virus in some blood samples of poultry birds and crows, chicken and egg consumption drastically fell across the state leading to a loss Rs 1,000 crore of farmers, vendors and other stakeholders related to poultry business in the state, members of Odisha Poultry Farmers? Association (OPFA) said here on Wednesday.

The members said that the state government has taken various initiatives to control the bird flu in the state and also culled thousands of poultry birds at Kerang and Bahanada.

Instead of immunization of the affected birds, culling of the fowls continued indiscriminately. The members lamented that without diagnosing the affected fowls, the birds were killed which resulted in a huge loss to the poultry farmers. The culling is also the worst form of cruelty to animals and birds, they alleged.

After the media hype and the state government resorting to the culling exercise, the consumers got scared and refrained from consuming chicken and eggs, which affected business of 30,000 farmers and another10 lakh people depending directly or indirectly on the trade. Some farmers have taken bank loans and the present loss has been great burden on them, the Association said and warned that the loss may lead to suicide by the loan-stressed farmers.
