Two more die of Swine Flu in Orissa, Toll rises to 7

BNO Desk: Breaking News! Despite the government claims that Swine Flu is not a big concern in the state, Orissa reported three H1N1 deaths in the last 24 hours, taking the toll to seven. Two more people died of Swine Flu on Wednesday.


The victims were identified as Supriya Mishra (41) and Manini Manosmita (27). Supriya Mishra hailed from Bargarh. She was undergoing treatment at the VSS Medical College in Burla after her condition deteriorated.

Manini Manosmita became the latest victim of Swine Flu in Orissa. She died at Kalinga Hospital in Bhubaneswar this morning. Unfortunately, Manini was the daughter of Additional Commissioner of Commercial Taxes Harihar Sethi (55), who died of Swine Flu yesterday.
The Father-Daughter duo were residents of Khandagiri area of Bhubaneswar. There is anger among the public in Orissa over the rising incidents of Swine Flu deaths and positive cases.

It has been alleged that none of the medical stores have Tamiflu or anti-Swine Flu medicines. It is said that the Capital Hospital (Government) also does not have adequate supply of Swine Flu medicines.

Victims' family ostracized

BHUBANESWAR: After the death of Harihara Sethi, the assistant commissioner commercial tax and his daughter Manini Manaswini due to swine flu within 24 hours here on Wednesday, the family is facing social isolation. "No one is coming to our house to express condolences. We are virtually become outcasts," Harihara Sethi's son Suvendu Mohanty said.

They alleged that the state government has shown no concern for the safety and protection of the family. They also alleged that the two private hospitals, where their family members were being treated treatment, did not cooperate and instead harassed them and neglected in treatment.

"We are in a state of shock and panic. But there is not a single word of solace from the government nor have they shown any concern for the family, who are the most vulnerable. The state government should at least send a team of doctors and vaccinate us," Mohanty said.

Sethi was admitted to Kalinga Hopsital on August 5 with complaints of fever and flu-like symptoms. He succumbed to the disease on Tuesday morning after acute respiratory disease syndrome and his lungs stopped functioning. His daughter, Manini Manaswini, who was admitted to Apollo Hospital on August 7 with similar symptoms died on Wednesday morning. She was also detected H1N1 positive.

Mohanty alleged that the staff of both hospitals were hesitant to touch the patients. "The nurses did not attend to the patients properly. And even after the death, we faced a lot of problem to transport the bodies as none of the hospitals provided us any vehicle or ambulance. Even drivers were not ready to carry the bodies.' However, both the hospitals refuted the allegations and said all facilities were provided to patients and the staff tried their best to save the lives.

Senior consultant, Intensive care, Apollo Hospital, Banambara Ray said, "The allegations are totally untrue. I myself was sitting for hours with the patient and had kept a close watch on the developments."

Bikas Patnaik, the chief of State Disease Surveillance Cell said, "We have instructed the hospitals to give preventive to the family members and those who are coming in close contact with infected persons. We also have a particular guideline to transport the bodies of swine flu victims."

When contacted the health minister Pasanna Achrya said, "We will send a team of doctors to the house Harihara Sethi with Tamiflu tablets and other preventives. They must not get panicky."
