PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Oregon Health & Science University is joining the University of Washington to create a regional biodefense center to protect against emerging or re-emerging infectious diseases that pose a serious threat.

The center will be based in Portland and established with a 5-year, $40.7 million grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health.

Health officials say the nation needs to keep expanding its ability to detect and combat infectious diseases - whether they are spread naturally or through a bioterrorist attack.

The new regional research center will join others across the country to better protect the population while conducting research aimed at preventing or combating a public health crisis, such as a major influenza outbreak.
