Sickness keeps more than 85 Lincoln students home

<DL class=moz-border id=story-font-size done22="89" done21="89" done13="89" done12="89" done11="89" done8="89" done5="89" done26="0" done25="0"><DT>More than 85 Lincoln K-8 School students missed school Thursday and Friday with nausea, vomiting and stomach cramps.</DT></DL>The symptoms, which are consistent with norovirus, prompted a Benton County Health Department sanitarian and nurse to visit Lincoln on Friday morning.
Charlie Fautin, deputy director of the department, said the two employees met with school administrators and staff members to discuss how to contain the apparent outbreak.
?The district and the school are on top of things,? Fautin said. ?They are taking the right precautions and steps, such as using the proper cleaners.?
County health officials have contacted several Lincoln families with children showing symptoms of norovirus to collect specimens, which will be sent to a state health laboratory for testing.
?I think the results are going to show it?s norovirus,? Fautin said. ?Hopefully, by the time they come back, though, the virus will be gone.
It?s a very miserable and contagious disease, but it?s a self-limiting one, too.?
So far, no similar outbreaks have been reported at any other Corvallis schools, according to district spokeswoman Carol Reeves.
