Re: Oregon: Patient isolated and being tested for ebola

We recieved a company wide email regarding this issue this evening. Facts and stuff to inform callers.

Prov recently instituted a big Ebola awareness push, including updated PPE guidance, updated EMR workflows, and education. Hopefully it was enough.

On a further note, the email did also say that the Patient was considered Low Risk.

Update: Patient Being Tested for Ebola Virus

October 31, 2014
4:15 p.m.

We are confirming today that a patient has been admitted to Providence Milwaukie Hospital for testing for the Ebola virus. Initial Department of Health screening indicated testing should be conducted. Based on this screening, the patient is considered low-risk for having the Ebola virus.

At Providence, patient and caregiver safety is our greatest priority and we take compliance with all infectious disease protocols very seriously.

We are working closely with local, state and federal public health officials. Following monitoring of the patient based on travel history and symptoms, and after screening by state emergency preparedness experts, the patient was taken to a safe, secure area inside Providence Milwaukie Hospital that is isolated.

Care teams onsite and throughout Providence are prepared and ready to handle this situation. During the past few weeks, we have trained more than 550 of our caregivers across the state to use the specialized personal protective equipment needed when treating patients with Ebola. We also set up a specialized, real-life training center at Providence Milwaukie.

That center is safe and secure and allows us to isolate the patient and the care teams. It is this center that is now in use as we monitor and treat the patient.

We continue to treat all other patients at Providence Milwaukie. Please be assured that all precautions and protocols are being very carefully followed. It is safe for patients and their family members to come to the hospital.

Facts about the Ebola virus

The Ebola virus is not an airborne virus, and it cannot be contracted by casual contact (walking by a person, etc.). It can be contracted only through direct contact with bodily fluids, such as direct contact with the blood of an infected patient.

With the heightened need for screening for the Ebola virus, we have made it a priority to increase patient screening across Providence facilities in October. That effort has helped us know what to look for and what to do to contain any potential exposure. To ensure consistent education and training, we have been practicing infectious disease procedures to make sure that those who might care for Ebola patients are trained on patient screening, use of personal protective equipment and other essential measures. This recent effort, in addition to our commitment to high-quality care, has prepared us well.

A Liberian woman who was rushed to Providence Milwaukie Hospital on Friday over fears she might be infected with Ebola is no longer suffering from a fever, according to members of the Portland family she was visiting.

"She's feeling good," the husband in the host family said during a brief interview on Saturday. "There's no more temperature."
...
The family will continue monitoring themselves and staying put until the woman's status is known, the man said. A blood sample has been sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which is in charge of Ebola testing. The results might be known later this evening or tomorrow, he said.

Still nothing for 48 hours - I think there must be a result somewhere, but perhaps a number of notifications & preparations must be made before a press release. The longer this goes on, the more I suspect a positive.

Update: Acute Ebola Ruled Out for Low-Risk Patient at Providence Milwaukie Hospital

November 02, 2014
3 p.m.

This afternoon, federal, state and county health leaders and caregivers at Providence Health & Services announced that a patient under monitoring at Providence Milwaukie Hospital tested negative for Ebola.

?Based on test results and an evaluation of her clinical condition, I?m pleased to say there are no cases of Ebola in Oregon. The CDC has advised us that no further testing is required,? says Paul Lewis, M.D., Tri-County health officer. ?We are satisfied that the system worked and continues to work well.?

For now, the patient will continue to require inpatient care and monitoring. She will remain in the separate unit where she is being treated at Providence Milwaukie. Physicians, nurses and other caregivers will continue to follow all infectious disease and safety protocols.

?This is good news for our patient, her family and her friends,? said Dave Underriner, chief executive for Providence in Oregon. ?Throughout this process, our specially trained teams here at Providence have provided outstanding, compassionate care. We were ready, and it showed.?

?I want to thank all of our caregivers for their professionalism and commitment to delivering the best care with compassion,? added Underriner.

Out of respect for the patient?s privacy, no additional information on her condition or potential release is available.
