Oregon's second swine flu death confirmed: a young Marion County child
by Don Colburn, The Oregonian
Tuesday June 23, 2009, 4:51 PM

Oregon health authorities have confirmed the state's second known death -- in a young Marion County child -- from the new H1N1 influenza virus, also known as swine flu.

The child, identified only as "younger than 5 years old," died June 15, and infection with the swine flu virus was confirmed by the Oregon State Public Health Laboratory Tuesday. The child had "no known underlying medical conditions and a two-day history of fever," and was not hospitalized, officials said.

The Oregon Department of Human Services posted the information online but did not send out a formal news release. "We're in this quandary," said DHS spokesman Jim Sellers. "We have 400 deaths a year from seasonal flu in Oregon, and we don't want to alarm people."

Dr. Karen Landers, Marion County health officer, said so far the swine flu "is behaving just as we would expect a seasonal flu to behave."

Children under age 5, pregnant women and people older than 65 years old are most at risk from complications from influenza, whether the seasonal type or the newly identified H1N1 strain.

Health officials have confirmed 219 cases of swine flu in Oregon since the outbreak began. The state's first reported death from swine flu occurred June 7 in a Marion County woman who had multiple underlying health conditions and died after eight days in a hospital.

Seasonal influenza kills healthy children in late June?

Re: Oregon Confirms 2nd death

It is a quandary, as Oregon has the second highest unemployment rate in the USA.
State finances are dismal.
Oregon only purchased 7% of it's Tamiflu allowance (see full analysis at link ).

The official word here is business as usual, and we have actually been quite unaffected by A/H1N1 so far. The line we are supposed to give out is " of course, be careful and follow the recommendations, but don't go to the doctor, ER, etc. unless you are really sick, remember, it's mild for most." Any Tamiflu usage is highly discouraged (can cause resistance to develop) .

I can certainly see their point of view, but how quickly can we ramp up "appropriate engagement by the public" when it does hit here?

Re: Oregon Confirms 2nd death

I guess they think that they can fool the public by making such silly statements.

What will happen when the public finally wakes up to discover the that they have been lied to on such a massive scale?

Iran today?

Talk about panic. I can not think of a better way to cause panic that the way our public health officials have handled this pandemic since mid-May.

What goes around comes around. I hope they have a good escape plan, a way to avoid the public ire when it comes, as it surely will. You can only tell the same lie so many times before someone, no not someone but lots of people begin to understand that they have been deceived.

I pitty those who have told us these lies and who were the authors of this propaganda campaign as a whole. These acts while they may never be heard in the courts of man will most certainly be heard. The perpetrators of this farce better be ready to defend not their lives or freedom but their very souls for what they have done.

Re: Oregon Confirms 2nd death

No matter what your political views are in America, it still seems like dollars are more important than lives for those with power. It is indeed shocking that most financial news goes to great lengths to avoid mentioning the word "influenza". The reason why:

From the World Bank report:

"In the case of a
serious flu, 70 percent of the overall economic cost
would come from absenteeism and efforts to avoid infection"

http://siteresources.worldbank.org/INTGDF2009/Resources/gdf_ch01_007-036_web.pdf

Anyone adding up the costs of NOT doing so?
