Health Officials Identify First Suspected Case of Monkeypox in Oregon
June 19, 2022 Oregon Capital Chronicle Health, News

The first suspected case of monkeypox has emerged in Oregon.

The Oregon Health Authority said Thursday that an unidentified man who is believed to be infected had traveled to a community with confirmed cases. It said he is isolated and following public health recommendations.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is conducting a confirmatory test, the state said. It did not release the man’s name, age or area of residence; nor did it say where he had traveled.

The health authority said it’s working with the CDC, public health officials and the man’s providers to identify anyone who might have been exposed...

Monkeypox virus is present and spreading in Lane County. Public Health officials report two presumed cases of the viral infection were identified Friday.

Test samples of both infections are being confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Lane County Public Health spokesperson Jason Davis said neither patient has a travel history to an area with known cases of monkeypox.

“That means it is present in our community and circulating and there are likely cases out there that have not been identified yet,” Davis said. “We are currently working on contact tracing for these first two cases.”...

...These cases are the second and third in Oregon. While many initial cases were identified amongst men who have sex with men, health officials note that anyone can get monkeypox...

DAVID RUPKALVIS, The World Jul 7, 2022 Updated 25 min ago

As Monkeypox continues to slowly move through the United States, including cases in Oregon, the Oregon Health Authority is using a three-pronged approach to reach out to those at greatest risk.

Dr. Tim Menza, senior health adviser for the hMPXV response at the OHA Public Health Division, said there has been one confirmed case in Oregon, with five presumptive cases. Three of those presumptive cases were announced Wednesday, coming from Multnomah, Washington and Lane counties.

Menza said the outbreak worldwide has seen 7,243 cases in 52 countries. In the U.S., there has been 605 cases in 34 states....

PORTLAND, Ore. — Health officials in Oregon said Thursday they have confirmed six cases of monkeypox in the state.

The cases — all affecting men — include one in Multnomah County; three in Lane County; and two in Washington County, the Oregon Health Authority said in a statement. There have been no deaths.

Globally, nationally and in Oregon, cases were initially associated with travel but more recent cases do not have a history of travel, indicating transmission within the United States and Oregon, officials said. Officials said the same in Washington state this week, reporting nine cases in the most populous county, which includes Seattle...
